"Hey! fucking Son of a mothereffing biscuit eater" ... Sophia yelled and swore as a car raced past her, splashing rainwater on her car in the process.

"Did you just cuss at me young lady" her mother shocked voice gasped through the receiver making Sophia wince. She'd forgotten that she had answered her mother's call and that they'd been talking before the rude driver's incident. She exhaled, softening her voice to explain.

"That wasn't meant for you Mom, it was some...".

Her mother cut her off. "I don't care what you have to say, Sophia, I didn't raise you to spit such words out of your mouth, if you had a man in your life, you'd have learned to filter your words and tone down that nasty temper of yours..."

Sophia couldn't believe it, she hadn't even used any horrible words, yet she was being reprimanded, and how was getting a man in her life even related to her having a filthy mouth. The sound of the rain splattering on the car drowned out Sophia's mother's voice on the phone, giving her some respite. She sighed, as she listened to her cutting words. They felt like nails driving into her coffin.

"You're not getting any younger Sophia, you need a guy in your life, even if he turns out to be younger than you. You go around with those single friends of yours and that's why you can't get any guy to notice you. You glare at anyone that approaches you, but you spend money on those little brats you call your workmates like there's no tomorrow, you don't even care about me, you don't care about your mother's feeling, are you trying to send me to an early grave with worry huh, is that it".

Sophia flexed her wrist on the steering, as she tried to sound like she was concerned about her mother's worry, but she knew she failed miserably.

"Mom, I do care about you, I'm always trying to please you, why are you doing this to me on a Monday morning?. What is it you want from me, I bought you that mink fur that cost a fortune right, also that Audi A5 you always wanted to add to your car collection so you could show off to your friends. I've been trying my best mom, can you just cut me some slack" she got out tiredly, trying to focus on the road ahead of her, she felt a migraine beaconing.

"That's just it Sophia if you were married or had a man in your life, or even little kids to give your attention to, you wouldn't be spending like that".

Sophia took another deep breath, counting to five before she answered.

"I'm driving right now, can we talk later, I'm going to get into an accident if we keep this up".

Her mother's voice got intense. "You're always running from having this conversation with me... Sophia, this is honestly serious, all my friend's daughters are either married or getting married... "

Sophia reached for a piece of nylon, she placed it on the mouthpiece of her phone, creasing it over to make a static sound.

"Hello... Hello...Mom...mom... I think I'm losing connection, let's talk later ok... Bye"

She ended the call, glaring at her phone before exhaling tiredly. "Darn it! I'm so tired of this. Can't she give me a break for at least today, I thought we were making progress when she'd stopped disturbing my sleep at night... How wrong I was.

It's like she doesn't have anything to do other than bother me.

Should I just get a new phone?" she mumbled to herself, as she drove towards the RSVP parking lot, she maneuvered to her usual parking spot only to notice a black Ferrari SF90 Stradale occupying her space.

She drove around it, till she found a free spot. She parked, got her stuff, and came out of the car. She trudged towards the sleeklooking car, examining it.

It was breathtakingly awesome. Her eyes darted around the environment, checking for the installed security cameras. Finding no one that was pointed in her direction, She hit the car with her heels, leaving a dent.

"Serves you right for being in my space just because you're an expensive car. My auto is way much better" she huffed, then walked around the car, spitting at the mirror for good measures. She smiled, satisfied at taking out her frustration.

Sophia sauntered into the company in high spirit. Next time, the owner would find somewhere else to park. She grinned at the thought. Sophia's Mom made her depressed with her constant reminders that she didn't have anyone to call her own.

Her mother wanted her in a relationship and had given her an ultimatum just the week before. Sophia had thought that with the ultimatum in place, her Mom would stop bothering with calls, she was very wrong on those counts.

Her mother had threatened her to get a guy before the year ran out, or else she'd take matters into her own hands.

Sophia's friends had also been hired by her mom for that very purpose, so they were always trying to hook her up at the slightest chance.

Her mother had been right about her spending, she could agree with that, but she only did it because she wanted her to have a good life. She also wanted her friends to enjoy any benefits she brought to the table.

She was already rich, It was not like she could spend all her earnings on herself. She had everything she needed, except a man as her mother told her every other day.

Once she got into the company, she was met with friendly faces, saying their hellos and hi. They all liked her, mostly because she spent a lot at team dinners. She entered the elevator, punching the number to her department.

She adjusted her orange top, smoothing her black pencil skirt. She would have preferred sneakers, but heels gave a more cooperative feel. The elevator pinged open, and she stepped out to meet the familiar faces of her team.

She was their leader and had been leading them for five years successfully. They designed pieces of jewelry, clothes, shoes, and accessories. She was in charge of making sure that everything was of quality, saving the higherups the trouble.

She was a boss in her little corner. She had worked for nine years, painstakingly building up her profile, until the company felt almost helpless without her. Maybe a little bit of an exaggeration, but she felt it was that way.

She approached her desk, surprised to see that it had been cleared. She paused, looking around at the curious faces of her team of ten designers.

"What's with my table. Are we renovating or something?" She looked around for an explanation until her eye landed on Leroy who was just stepping in.

"Miss Sophia, Mr. Sanchez is asking for you in his office. He says it's an urgent matter"

"Urgent matter?" She repeated, before smiling. He had been hinting at a promotion for a weak. She guessed that was what he was referring to as an urgent matter. It was about time she got one tho.

"I think he's going to promote you" Lyka chirped, her bob haircut bouncing at her enthusiasm.

Sophia's heart fluttered, but she played off Lyka's comment."Don't I wish". Sophia couldn't stop her smile from getting wider at the confirmation of her thoughts from another individual. "Wish me, luck guys".

Leroy smirked. "Not like you'll be needing it. You're the best worker LC has".

Sophia didn't want to appear too proud. "Oh please, it's not like am indispensable"

Lyka got up from her seat, all fired up."If he fires you, we'll go on a year strike, organize a huge protest for them to take you back" Lyka promised, all eager. Sophia chuckled.

"That's the spirit guys. I'll go now, fingers crossed. Get back to work. Time is money".

They all took their seats, watching as she got into the elevator. Once it closed, they scampered out of their seats, rushing towards Leroy's desk.

Mary was the first to break the silence. "Spill Leroy, is she getting promoted or fired".

Leroy shrugged. "I don't know. Mr. Sanchez didn't give a lot away, he just asked for her".

Lyka's lips pouted in a frown. "Mr. Sanchez better not fire her. I don't want to work under a new boss. Sophia is the best".

Ivan nodded in agreement, looking skeptical. "But it's not up to Mr. Sanchez. He's not the director, he's just the manager. He doesn't have a say if the orders are from the higherups".

Lyka crossed her arms, looking thoughtful.

"You're right Ivan. And there's nothing we can do to stop Mr. Sanchez, even the protest idea. I don't want to lose my job" she confessed. The others nodded in agreement.

"Well, no one would. Miss Sophia is competent, a great teacher, she makes everyone wants to be their best. It's their loss If they let her go"

"Yeah. Her family is rich so she won't feel it" Leroy added to lift the heavy atmosphere.

"Ugh! I hate Mr. Sanchez. Sophia's such a beautiful pure soul" Ivan got out dreamily, earning an eye roll from Lyka.

"You like her don't you?" She asked staring at him. It was so sudden that he fidgeted in his spot, losing his ability at forming a reply. Lyka pressed on, ignoring his panicked reaction.

"Sorry to burst whatever bubble you're in but she'll never be interested in you, so stop dreaming. Let's get back to work. Miss Sophia hates slacking off" she muttered, walking back to her desk. The others followed suit.

Ivan dragged his heavy legs back to his desk, doing his best to avoid the gazes of everyone. He had always crushed on Sophia, but he hadn't expected Lyka to tattle on him like that.

It made color rush up his face, he got speechless, unable to take a decent breath. Love was a chokedup feeling for him.

Sophia pushed the door walking back inside making everyone act more serious than they had been.

"Ivan, I want your report on my desk once I get back... I've given you lots of grace, today is your last day ok," she told. Ivan nodded quickly.

Sophia chuckled at the blush spreading across his cheeks. He was younger than her, but Mom doesn't care about their age right, should I just go with this guy since he clearly had a crush on me, Sophia thought... No way, mom was probably just playing, she'd have a heart attack if I brought this guy home. Sophia sighed, stepping out of the office. She hoped she got the promotion, at least then she'd have something to celebrate.

Mr. Sanchez's office was interesting... Sophia thought as she looked around the room, before refocusing her gaze on the man who occupied the office her immediate boss. There were paper wraps of chocolate everywhere, his documents pilled up to the roof of his office, slipping to the floor. He was an odd man, but he was an efficient administrator, the only problem he had was that his office was always a disaster, and so was his appearance.

He was in his fifties, his eyes a bit sunken with thick lashes that made them look unique. His nose had a little bit of crookedness to it, probably from fights while he had been a dashing young playboy...

Maybe I should tell my Mom that he's the one I want to marry, Sophia grinned at the thought, shaking her head to stave off how absurd it was.

He was too old, too disorganized to consider, plus he was getting bald, and the little hair he had, grew like a disease on top of his bald head. He wore suits throughout the season, even when it got extremely hot.

Sweating was his second nature and dabbing at his face with his neverending supply of wipes he owned was his motto of the day. The sweating was a bit extra as she watched him squirm in his seat.

She questioned if it was a good reaction, maybe it wasn't a promotion after all. She pushed it aside, smiling broadly to put him at ease.

"Leroy said you needed me urgently. Did I do anything wrong, Mr. Sanchez?" Sophia raised her eyebrows, pursing her dry lips.

Mr. Sanchez jerked as if he had been daydreaming all the while that Sophia spoke. He twined his fingers, placing them on the desk. His gaze became focused, his voice assuring.

"Nothing like that Sophia. You've been our best worker this year, and also for the previous years. It would be a shame to let you go. I plan to keep you here until you retire".

Sophia smiled, her worries subsiding. Maybe he was going to promote her after all.

"I'm relieved to hear that Mr. Sanchez and I promise to do better this year..."

"You have to quit the team" He announced, adjusting his tie which seemed to be choking him. Sophia's mouth hung open in shock before she pulled herself together.

"But you just assured me that you'd keep me here until I retired...".

"I know, I know, but something urgent came up. We had a lot of candidates that we took into consideration, but I know You are the only one capable to take on this assignment, so I recommended you, and you got accepted." Sophia nodded, waiting patiently as Mr. Sanchez struggled with his words. "You'll become the director's assistant" he dropped.

"A what..." Her eyes widened in shock. Was he demoting her? He wanted her to leave her position to become an assistant, which was almost equivalent to getting fired. "Mr. Sanchez, are you demoting me... I don't understand what I've...". She stuttered, her heart burning in her chest.

He cut her rambling short with a wave of his hand. "You haven't heard everything, Sophia. Don't worry about the paycheck because it's going to be doubled."

He got her attention enough for her to calm down. She was still skeptical of the whole thing.

"But I'm going to be just an assistant, why is my paycheck getting doubled." She queried, raising an eyebrow.

"You're not just going to be an ordinary assistant Sophia. You'll be the owner of the company's assistant. You get to work on the very top floor. Think of all the connections you can make, but you'll have to last six months with him" he sold his pitch, line, hook, and sinker, getting her interested. He watched her, waiting for a decision.

She took her time to think about it. He was right, the top bosses were all at the top level. She had always been fascinated with those who worked above her. She wanted to know how they brought her ideas to life, how they knew exactly what she was trying to showcase through her designs, how they hooked their investors and those elaborate dinner parties she always heard of. Plus a double paycheck. She was in for that alone. "Just for six months?"

Mr. Sanchez nodded.."Just for six months, then you'll get back to your little boss corner. During the duration of that six months, you'll have to adjust yourself to receiving orders, drink splashing, and verbal...

The director is a very difficult man with a temper. You'll be running in a month if you don't have a backbone.

You have to resume work by Five in the morning since that's the time he comes to the office to get things done, he likes to be ahead of everything and everyone. He prefers to have his way. Do you understand?"

Sophia pondered it over. He was probably an old man so how hard could it be. She knew she could take verbal abuse due to solving conflicts in the sales department. Some customers were made to tick off anger buttons you didn't know you had, Mr. Lennox couldn't be that bad. "I'll do it, Mr. Sanchez. I can handle any type of difficulty for an increase in my salary. I'll do anything" she said, smiling as she pictured her shopping list, some items she had ticked off were getting back on.

"Great" he clapped, bringing out a document, and providing her with a pen. "Just sign here and it's done" he dabbed at the sweat that dribbled down his nose.

Sophia took the pen, signing her scrawny signature onto the document. He stamped it with a flourish, looking pleased with himself. "When is he arriving?"

"He's already in his office" he deadpans in a manner that almost made Sophia burst out laughing. She swallowed it tho, surprised at the information.

"That's odd, shouldn't I have been notified of this a week earlier".

"I was notified of his arrival yesterday. A piece of advice, inform your team members to be on their toes. He's a perfectionist who'd not tolerate any form of incompetence".

Sophia nodded, he sounded like a douchebag to her. "I'll let them know to be on their best behavior."

"Good luck Sophia," he wished, swabbing at the beads of water droplets on his forehead.

"I can tell I'll be needing that, but are you sure you're alright Mr. Sanchez?" She asked in concern, his clothes were soaked through.

"I am perfect miss Sophia. You may leave now, I have to get back to work".

"Ok, Sir". She stepped out of the office, closing the door gently behind her. She stared at the closed door worrying about Mr. Sanchez.

"I was going to tell him to take off his suit or turn on the AC but he might not take it too kindly." She sighed and shrugged dramatically as she walked toward the elevator.

Mr. Sanchez's office had been like a torture chamber. The other offices were so different from his, that you'd think you were in another dimension once you got into his office. He had been working there for twentyeight years, so he was a bit oldfashioned. There were rumors that he was connected to Lennox Ray, the owner of the company, more like he was a distant cousin, and that was the reason he was given so much liberty.

He was a good boss, so it never bothered her how he chose to run his affairs. But now that she was to work under a new boss, a director whose feedback was negative, nearly downright scary, she felt a bit disturbed.

She squared her shoulders; I'm sure he's not that bad or was he?. She took a deep breath and then exhaled dispelling all the negative energy surrounding her. Sophia promised herself to be the best assistant he ever had.

Not that she would quit when extra money was involved just because of a bullying boss. How hard could it be to work for an old perfectionist?. She could take him.

"Let's go get that money".

Sophia's sweat trickled down her hairline as twenty pairs of eyes stared at her, all with an intensity that made her nervous. Her team stood around her desk, watching her without blinking. Sophia had called their attention, but she hadn't considered how they'd react to seeing her go, so she hesitated, but they kept watching her until she couldn't bear it. Sophia decided not to beat around the bush. "I've been transferred from this team".

Their shocked gasp carried through the quiet room as they fidgeted at their spot, unable to decide whether to hug her in comfort or stay put. Lyka was the first to break the awkward silence, swaying slightly towards Sophia.

"But why... Which team?" The others nodded, waiting eagerly for an answer.

"It's not another team... I'll be serving as an assistant to the top boss" she answered. Her team couldn't help their horrified gasps. Their worried gazes darted to each other in anger and anxiety. Sophia knew they'd feel vindictive for her.

"A demotion?" Leroy got out aghast. Ivan just stood in the corner like a scared mouse, not daring to open his mouth.

"Mr. Sanchez can't do this to you. Are you going to quit? You should have dragged his hair for allowing it to happen. Right guys?" They all nodded, murmuring their displeasure all at once. She reached out to silence them, getting their attention.

"It's just for six months. I'll miss you guys terribly, but this is better than getting fired right. I get to work at the top flour". She tried for enthusiasm, but their expression remained the same.

"But still, you're the best team manager we have. Mr. Sanchez can't just do this" Ivan's small voice uttered from the back, drawing everyone's attention.

Mary quickly agreed. " You're right Ivan. People at the top are just assholes. They make decisions without thinking about our feelings. They push us around like pawns in a chess game... How can they just make..." Sophia stopped her flow of words by glaring at her.

"What have I said about insulting the boss... Just let it go Mary". She chastised mildly. "I'm ok with this arrangement. The pay is good". She assured. Lyka ran into her arms, hugging her tightly.

"We'll miss you, Sophia. You've been the best supervisor I've ever worked with" she cried into the embrace. Sophia patted her back, surprised by their actions. The others joined in too, almost tripping her. They finally let go, once the extended hug made everyone uncomfortable. She was quick to reassure them.

"Hey, none of that dull atmosphere in my team. You all have to be hyped ok. Treat my replacement the same way you treated me, and..." She paused, remembering the barbeque party her friends were throwing for her, another attempt of theirs to get her to hook up or find a potential mate. "You all are invited to a barbeque party at my friend's place tonight. I'll text you the address".

They got excited, giving each other a high five.

"You're the best Sophia," Leroy said, giving her a thumbs up. Sophia smiled, picking up her bag.

"Wish me luck at my new job" she got out, and they were all rushing to hug her again.

Sophia managed to calm them enough to sneak out of the department. Her new workspace was on the top floor. The offices looked extravagant, the pieces of equipment all topnotch, but the workers she came across seemed a little stuck up. Everything felt too remote. Everyone was minding their own business, it was a clear contrast to her former department where they goofed around, listened to music, and shared ideas to get inspiration.

Sophia missed her team already. She approached the elevator leading to Mr. Lennox Ray's space. He worked with only five people, with her as an assistant making it six.

He was an old dictator, she thought throwing her advice of not insulting bosses out of the window. Most of the workers had never met Lennox Ray in person, probably due to his old age.

But Sophia imagined him as a man with salt and pepper hair, shaky wobbly fingers, he probably sweated like Mr. Sanchez too.

Sophia chuckled at the thought, getting into the elevator. "Let's meet our old new boss, and kick him where the sun doesn't shine If he gets too harsh. If that doesn't work then I'll have to improvise...

Maybe spit into his coffee, and watch him drink until I simmer down." She murmured to herself, grinning at the image it brought to mind.

The elevator pinged open, she stepped out, bumping into the hard shoulder of a guy at the entrance, the glass of drink he held spilling onto her dress.

Sophia gasped, jumping back, before looking up at the culprit. Oh, my fu...freaking Zeus! Definitely, the type of guy to take home to Mom. The next events seemed to go in slow motion.

He blinked in surprise, his long dark lashes fanning over a darker shade of eyeball, eyes so intense, it made her slightly breathless when they held hers...

Sophia was sure she drooled a bit from how perfect he looked, he could probably star in most women's fantasy if he decided to take his face to the filming industry.

He was like those models who looked so perfect, it was hard not to watch them because everything they did was enchanting. His whole face was flawless, but his dark eyes and dark long hair made him more intense, and intimidating.

He grunted at the impact, pulling back the glass cup. His eyes scanned for any spills on his shirt, irritation staining his feature. Sophia cleared her throat, as she waited patiently for an apology, she guessed him to be one of the managers in the numerous department the company had.

He looked up at her, dark eyes probing. Sophia eyed him too until he made to move past her. Sophia scoffed at the audacity he was displaying, as her hand shot out to grab at his shirt, stopping him. He turned to face her with an incredulous look on his face, his gaze darting to the chunk of his shirt that Sophia held onto. Sophia knew his type, just because they were blessed with the face of an angelarrogant much they thought they could get away with anything.

"You spilled your drink on me, aren't you forgetting to say something," she asked, raising her eyebrows. His hands came over hers to pull it off, but she held on with vice. His voice came out raspy, as he tried to pry her hands off.

"Maybe next time, you should be more careful when stepping out of the elevator. Take this as a little lesson". Sophia gaped at him, the condescending way he spoke had her temper rising.

He spoke like everyone was beneath him. Was everyone at the top level rude?. Was this guy being disrespectful because he heard of her new assignment? Sophia didn't want to know the reason. She wanted his apology.

He had given up trying to get her to relinquish her hold "What did you just say? I should learn from this. You spilled your drink on me, and you dare to say that to me.

I'm so shocked right now, wow, this is just the worst thing I've heard in all my years of existing " she said, earning her a disbelieving look from him. He stared at the hand clutching at his shirt.

"Let go, or I call security. And trust me, you'll not only be thrown out" he threatened, his gaze serious. Sophia snorted as she let go, not wanting to get sacked on the first day of work.

Sophia was going to let it go until he muttered a curse under his breath, he also looked exultant so she decided to wipe the smug look off his face. I won't be bringing him home Mom, sorry. Her hands left her side, striking the guy's face.

The slap rang through the quiet office, earning the shocked gasp of its occupants. Some of the workers got off their seats, looking pale, their mouths hung open in shock.

"That'll teach you to apologize when you're wrong, and also to speak to your colleagues respectfully.

I'll be reporting you to the director because you're not fit to work here" she searched for his identity tag, roughly shoving her hand into his pocket as he watched her in Surprise.

She pulled out his wallet, yanking out his card... "You didn't even bother to put on a tag. You think you're some big shot huh, Mr..." She turned the card, her face draining as she read the name, her voice barely audible.

Her hands shook, as she squinted at the writing. Lennox Jr Ray. She lifted her gaze slowly towards the dark eyes that loomed over her. They were furious. It was almost as if they would engulf her if she so much as breathed a word.

How do I salvage such a situation? Her mouth dried up, making her lick at them nervously. Her brain was blank as she replayed the last few minutes. It seemed everyone held their breath with her, waiting for the director's verdict.

She looked back at him, clutching his card, attempting to apologize. Sophia didn't get her chance.

"In my office. Now" he grounded out, strode away from her, rubbing at his cheek.

Sophia stared at the other workers who just shook their heads pitifully, she knew she'd screwed up. Big time.

Sophia turned to face the worker, quickly unclutching the card from her death grip. She had wrinkled it, adding to more list of offenses he could use against her.

"Why didn't you warn me that he was the director" she whispered yelled, and would have messed up her hair by pulling at it, but she restrained herself. Looking like a ghost after hitting the director was not going to cut it. The workers stared at her like she'd lost her mind. One of them finally deemed it fit to answer her, with a raised accusing finger pointed in Sophia's face.

"We used our freaking eyes to signal you, but you ignored us" she whispered back, looking mad. Sophia worried if they would get in trouble because of her.

Sophia cringed, this was just the worst thing ever. "Someone should have just shouted director" she got out, arms flailing. Talk about the first day at work disasters.

"Our boss hates voice raising. This is probably your last day here, so just get on with it" the girl replied, taking her seat. Sophia read her name tag. Park Tzuyu.

She decided that their pheromones didn't rhyme, not with the condescending tone of voice she used with her. Sophia cursed as she walked towards the office, noticing the assistant spot opposite it.

A beeper was on the desk, with some documents and a classylooking laptop. She stepped into the office, Crossing her fingers behind her. Here goes nothing.

Lennox tried not to notice how his cheek tingled from the slap, looking up from his desk as the door to his office opened and the occupational hazard walked in, her head bowed with hands behind her back.

Lennox couldn't believe what had happened earlier. She had slapped him, treating him like some lowclass worker after she had bumped into him, leading to the loss of his camomile tea. He already felt on edge without it.

After going through his file, he realized that she was supposed to be his new assistant.

She met his gaze, opening her mouth to apologize.

"You're fired. Get your things and leave immediately". Lennox got out, but she just stood there, unflinching.

"I'm not leaving. I'm your assistant on a contract for six months. You can't terminate that just because I made an honest mistake".

He couldn't believe her audacity. "I don't need an assistant, especially not one like you. I prefer to do things on my own, and what do you mean by you're not leaving" he asked, feeling frustrated. He wasn't used to talking so much, but the girl had a way of making him lose his temper.

"Just what it means Mr. Lennox Ray. I am so sorry I resorted to violence, it was horrible of me and I regret it, so I'm going to make it up to you by doing my job as your assistant until you forgive me... And don't you think it will look bad on your person if you decide to fire a worker on her first day. It brings bad luck." She meant it too which made him scoff. Lennox took a deep breath, trying to relax his ticking jaw. This was not happening for real, was it?.

"You'll be miserable if you insist on this Miss Sophia.." he addressed, taking notice of her nametag. "Manager of group B textiles, fashion designer" he raised an eyebrow in question, his dark eyes probing.

"Yes Mr. Ray. I've been working here for nine years, I am very good at any task assigned to me, I get things done in time, and I also multitask. You won't find a better assistant".

"A better assistant? I'll have you know that no assistant will do what you did earlier. Physical assault, character defamation, disturbance of public peace, those are weighty charges miss Sophia" he pointed out, watching her struggle between begging and her pride. She lost the battle of acting polite, glaring at him.

"Well, I wouldn't have had to do that if you had just apologized for being wrong" she snapped, then thought better of it. "I'm sorry for that Mr. Ray, please forgive my manners.

I thought you were a manager... " She trailed off, realizing that she was still defending herself. "Forgive me for my haughty behavior. I promise to do better and serve you to the best of my abilities Master Len Ray" she shouted, bowing dramatically.

Lennox watched her, with no amusement at her theatrics. She raised her head slowly, her looks defeated as she met his unwavering gaze. Lennox tapped his pen against his desk, coming off as bored as he thought it over.

He opened a cabinet, bringing out a bundle of files.

"I don't need an assistant, but if you insist, then here.." he flung the papers at her. She inhaled sharply as some of it hit her in the face before pooling around her. Lennox watched her clench her fist, gazing at the paper on the floor, then smiled as she looked up at him. "Those are the rules, read and abide by them. If you break any, you're out."

Her grey eyes sparkled." Really? You're not going to fire me. Oh my gosh, thank you so much. I got this" she agreed, crouching to the floor, and picking up the scattered papers. She stood up, clutching at them. "Do you need me to do anything else"?

"Get out, and refrain from raising your voice," he said coldly, making her smile drain off her face. She walked out the door, closing it gently even when he felt that she wanted to bang it shut.

Lennox found himself unable to concentrate. Why was she persisting, invading his space? He noticed the creases on his shirt where she had grabbed him earlier. Fine, let her stay. She'd leave when he made her life miserable. He watched her through the glass skeptical, a strange feeling clouding his mind. She was trouble.

Sophia took her seat, arranging her stuff on the vast desk. The leader of the team walked toward her.

"Hi, I am Kyle. The team manager. You're going to keep working here?" He didn't fire you" he asked curiously, warily glancing at the office, his voice a low murmur.

Sophia gleamed. "Of course not. He was nice about my mistake, he told me to be more careful next time. Plus, I'm good at my job".

Kyle watched her in admiration. "Wow, you're so confident. We were all sure you wouldn't last here. Tzuyu placed a bet on it" he confessed. Sophia shook her head at the piece of information.

"I'd place a bet on me too if I worked for Mr. Lennox Ray. But I thought the owner was more older".

"That's his son Lennox junior. He just came back from a trip. He's taking over everything, but we're not sure if it's going to be permanent. There have been rumors that he has spies among the workers. He plans to weed out all incompetent employees".

Sophia was baffled by the news. "But he just got here, why is he taking such drastic measures? ".

"I'm not sure" he answered shrugging. "If you need help with anything, just ask me ok".

"Sure. Thank you, Kyle". He nodded, walking back to his desk, on the lower deck.

Sophia stared at the laptop, exhaling tiredly. When Mr. Sanchez had said he was difficult to work for, and that she'd be running in a month, she hadn't taken him too seriously. Now she was paying for it.

Dozens of Half dressed hot guys dancing and mingling with her colleagues that now occupied Sana's backyard was her idea of a barbeque party, of course with drinks and grilled meats. Seeing people she hadn't invited was not. Sana watched the newcomers in surprise as they trooped into the yard

Bianca and Andria joined her, watching the new guest mingling with the hired dancer.

"Sophia's done it again. Now we have to order double of everything, and there aren't enough guys anymore" she grumbled, sipping at the wine she held.

"Told you guys she always ruins a party. She invited her whole freaking team for our barbeque gets together" Bianca uttered, turning to see Sophia coming through the door. "Talk of the devil".

Sophia smiled, both hands held out in front of her. "I'm so sorry I got here late" she rushed out, as they took in her appearance.

"What happened to your top?". Santa asked, pointing at the stain.

Sophia glanced at it. She had forgotten about the incident that almost led to her getting fired, due to working throughout the day, trying to learn Mr. Lennox's schedules. It was not easy, considering that Mr. Lennox hadn't offered to provide the information.

"My new boss spilled his drink on me. Couldn't text you all cause I'm an assistant now" she announced. The trio watched her, amusement in their eyes as they tried to catch the joke she was throwing. Sana noticed her serious expression.

"You're not joking?".

Sophia nodded. "I am not. Mr. Sanchez recommended me for it, so I started work today".

Sana almost dropped her wine flute. The other gaped at her in disbelief

"You got demoted? How's that even possible. You've slaved your whole life for that company and this is how they choose to pay you back" Bianca huffed, going to hug her. "I'm so sorry boo. You don't deserve this".

Sophia pulled out of the embrace. "I know I don't, but I'm getting paid double, and it's only for six months." She squealed, her mouth widening in a blinding smile. Andria didn't catch on.

"How are you going to adjust to taking orders... Wait double paycheck?" Andria retracted, her eyes widening.

Sana rolled her eyes. "Life's not all about money Andria".

"It does go a long way tho" she retorted.

Sophia cleared her throat, catching their attention. "Hey I got this. You two don't need to fight over my problem".

Bianca patted her shoulder. "You've got this Sophia. Welcome to the assistant club. We're all in the same profession now. But we have an issue. You invited all your teammates to our party. Sana has had to place extra orders that didn't make her smile at all".

Sophia chuckled, her eyes cutting at Sana who frowned as age crossed her arms. Sophia moved towards her, pouting her lips before throwing her arms over her shoulder. "Forgive me best friend, I just wanted my team to have fun... And you always throw party large scale and we end up wasting, so I decided to bring more people". She batted her lashes in apology, earning an eye roll from Sana.

"Fine. The party already started, let's get you into a more comfy dress so we can enjoy the night" she said, striding back into the house, expecting the three of them to follow. They did, muttering under their breath about how bossy she was.

Changing her dress didn't take long. They all came out to meet the others dancing, eating steaks, and just having a good time. They stood in pairs like couples.

"Where'd you get all the studs," Sophia asked, noticing the handsome guys strolling around.

"I hired them" Sana answered, all smug. "But they've paired up already since your ass decided to show up late. Whose your new boss?".

Sophia watched them as they all looked at her eagerly. "The director. Mr. Lennox Ray" she answered. Bianca choked on her drink. Sana and Andria gaped at her with wideopen eyes.

"The beast? Girl, you're in for a tough time. He's had like a hundred assistants, guess how long they lasted, the next freaking day".

Sophia's ears perked up at the piece of information.

Sana scoffed, sipping her wine." If he's that bad, then I should stop complaining about my boss. But Mr. Lennox is an old man, how hard can it be to tolerate him".

Sophia sighed. " He isn't old, and it's not Mr. Lennox, it's his son Lennox junior. His dad owns the company but now it's under his control. Mr. Sanchez told me he might be difficult, but I didn't take his warning seriously. I reported for work, and let me tell you, the top level is freaking paradise but with stuckup rude workers... Moving on, this guy bumped into me, spilled his drinks on me... "

"Oh my gosh, you don't even have to finish this story. You hit your boss right, tell me you struck him right across the face" Sana asked, almost jumping out of her seat.

Sophia paused for effect, their eyes almost comical as they focused all their attention on her, waiting for the bomb.

"You're right. I kinda lost it for a second. I slapped him".

Sana squealed unbelievably, her green eyes blown out of proportion. "Oh, my fucking Salad. That is the best thing I've heard all day. Was he pissed off? Forget about that for a minute, but since he's young, was he hot when pissed off?" She asked, clasping her hands. Sophia thought back to their encounter. His sharp glare came to her mind, those lush lips of his that seemed to sneer out every word he spoke... Kissable lips, hell yeah.

"He was. You should see him in person. He's a high heat kinda guy, except for the horrible attitude and controlling tendencies" she got out then frowned, remembering how he'd dismissed her earlier.

Andria held up a bottle of vodka. "Let's get drunk ladies, cause we need to celebrate badass Sophia.. but be careful, you might not be so lucky next time, he could have taken your ass to jail you know" she warned with a knowing look.

Sophia raised her empty glass. "That is duly noted. I'm on my Agame from now on" she crossed her heart as her glass was filled up. She tossed the drink down her throat. It left a burn in its wake but it also made her feel alive. She just hoped that after getting shitfaced drunk, she'd be able to wake early for work. "Time to party" she yelled, earning enthusiastic screams that matched hers.

The party proceeded late into the night, but she called it quits and headed home after two more drinks. Sophia entered her apartment, turning on the light switch. The house was neat, and in the proper order that she had left it. Sophia plopped down onto the couch, bringing out the file he had thrown in her face.

"Here we go. What are your rules Mr. Lennox Ray" she held the paper up, squinting to make out the words through her alcoholinduced brain? It gave her a migraine but she pushed through it.

Rule number one: Do not go through my emails. Do not make loud noises. No heels allowed. Do not step into my office without permission. Do not answer my calls. Obey all orders without complaint. Do not put on crinkling accessories.

Do not change the settings of anything in my office. Do not serve me coffee. Do not raise your voice. Do not... Do not... Do not... It was neverending.

There was a clause that stated that she'd be taking care of hiring cleaners for his house, taking care of their payment, going on long business trips, making extensive research to better their production batches, learn to sort between relevant and irrelevant calls.

"Ugh, this is so repressive," she complained as she read. Gum chewing wasn't allowed, she wasn't allowed to take the elevator. Her eyes widened at that. That was such a dick move. Sophia squeezed the papers together, tossing them into the wastebasket.

"Such an asshole... You've got yourself a challenge, Lennox Ray. I'm going to do my very best to please you, that when it's time for me to leave, you'll be begging me to stay with a triple increase in my fucking salary". She flopped back onto the bed grinning. "I'll be the best he's ever had".

Sophia, Bianca, Andria, and Sana stood outside the company, staring up at the vast complex of it. The breathtaking way it looked in the early hour of the morning grabbed the attention of the onlookers. They snapped out of their trance, almost simultaneously.

"Well here goes nothing. Wish me, luck guys."

Bianca touched her shoulder assuring. "You've got this Sophia. If you're in a bind, just text us. We'll help you out" she looked at the other, who nodded in support.

"Yeah, you should text me. I've been doing this for years" Andria bragged, making the others roll their eyes.

Sophia smiled. "I'll make sure to do that ma'am". She hugged each of them in turn. They all walked in, separating only at the elevators leading to their different department.

Sophia made sure not to wear heels, feeling grateful for that particular rule.

She put on a darker shade of clothing, making sure to look trim and proper, she watched her reflection on the glassy wall smirking. "Not bad at all, I mean I even washed my hair, and that's something all by itself".

The said hair was parked up neatly, and only some strands escaped, curling at the side of her face. Sophia hummed as the ride ascended. Once the elevator opened, she came face to face with Lennox, remembering the elevator rule all of a sudden.

She bowed in greeting, almost breaking her back, at how quick it was. She looked up only to hear his faint footsteps as he walked into his office. The jerk. She straightened, relaxing her back muscles.

Tzuyu stepped towards her, looking hostile like she always seemed to be. Was there a chip on her shoulder or something?. Sophia pushed the thought aside, giving her a friendly smile.

"Don't bother with doing anything. He finds faults, no matter how perfect you think you've done a job" she advised, boredom written all over her tired eyes. Didn't she get enough sleep? "You also need to be quiet once that Bell dings. I don't want you getting us Into trouble as you almost did yesterday".

Sophia nodded, choosing to just ignore her jab. "I'll be quiet as a mouse. You won't even know I'm here".

Tzuyu shrugged, her face in a perpetual scowl like the words coming out of Sophia's mouth were poison to her ears. She sauntered back to her seat.

Sophia walked towards her section, muttering under her breath. Tzuyu didn't seem to like her, she wondered why. Was she threatened by me, or was that just her attitude with everyone? She pushed the notion aside, focusing on doing a flawless job that would lead to no query. Lennox's door looked like it was locked, the shades were drawn up, blocking the world out. It felt like a cage. Was he happy locking people out, or was It because he was a sad person?

Sophia waited after doing the little work that got through her desk. The beeper on her desk remained silent, no phone calls came through either. It was like everything went straight to his office. The others worked until their fingers were numb.

Maybe that was why Tzuyu was hostile. The thought could be accurate. Who wanted to work like a slave, then watch someone else do nothing, yet receive double of everything you earned. Sophia shuddered at the feeling.

The muteness was also getting to her. A constant buzz in her head made it hard to concentrate. Sophia got off her seat. She needed a commotion, something to give the suffocating atmosphere some sparks.

She tripped on her feet, falling to the floor with an exaggerated Yelp. Tzuyu was the first to get to her before the others rushed toward her. The quiet rule was all but forgotten. Sophia smirked inwardly.

"Oh my gosh, are you ok? Did you twist an ankle" she asked in concern, surprising everyone as she felt around her leg? Sophia faked a pained groan, shaking her head.

"I think I dislocated my knees" she got out, earning a sympathetic gasp from Kyle.

The abrupt swish of the door opening got their attention. Lennox came out, a palpable dark aura hovering over his entire being. She couldn't look away once he pinned his cold eyes on her, it was reprimanding.

It was like he knew that she had done it on purpose to defy his rules and get his attention. He crossed his arms, the muscle straining the white shirt he wore. Sophia didn't realize when her gaze had slipped.

He had that pull to him, which made it hard to look away. He was hypnotizing. His voice was a rumbling storm when he spoke.

"What's the commotion about".

Tzuyu licked her lips nervously before she attempted to speak, Kyle beat her to it.

"Sophia tripped and dislocated her knees".

Sophia didn't like the intense gaze that he fixed on her. It made it difficult for her to breathe. What was this feeling, she asked herself, forcing herself to speak.

"Something must have been in the way. It hurt" she moaned in pain, just to make sure the disbelief in his eyes faded to concern. It doesn't. Mark got up from his crouching position, taking out his phone.

"Don't move, I'll call the hospital. You'll be fine".

"Don't call anyone" he ordered, his voice loud and clear making everyone stop what they were doing. Lennox walked towards her, then grabbed hold of her arm, pulling her sharply onto her feet.

She was too surprised to respond in a way that a person with fractured bones reacted. His gaze was cold, disappointment coming off him in waves, almost overwhelming her senses. Sophia felt small. "I prefer when my rules are followed, Miss Sophia.

The next time you pull a stunt like that, you'll be out of here. Try to take notice of your surroundings any time you decide to become an actress" he pointed at the installed cameras.

Stupid, so freaking stupid. Of course, there were surveillance cameras. She looked at them from the corners of her eyes, not daring to raise her head all the way, her hands squeezed behind her back.

"I'm sorry Mr. Lennox, it's just that everywhere was so quiet. But you must be an awesome person. You might be strict, but you care about us. You even came out here to..."

"Shut it, that won't work on me" he fired, making her flinch. He took her hand, startling her. Sophia looked at him, as an unbearable flutter started in the pit of her stomach. He placed a receipt on her open palm, then let go, and she looked through the bill gasping. The others watched the unfolding drama, not understanding, yet not daring to go back to their desk without his permission.

"What's this for... This is ridiculous. Forty thousand dollars" she almost waved it in his face but stopped herself in time.

"You trashed my car. The red car you spat on, then dented with your heels. I had to repaint it. That's what it cost". He cocked his head, watching her. Sophia's eyes widened comically, once the memory clicks.

"That's outrageous. There's no way that little dent amounted to this much". She cussed in her head. I should have known the asshole owned the car... A very apt contrast for someone who was all about quietness, driving such an automobile. She felt like pulling out her hair. He watched her calmly as if nothing could shock him.

"It's the latest model. Be happy you didn't break anything, or else you'd have been in debt for the rest of your life. Get back to work" he ordered, facing the rest. "And I hope this never repeats itself".

They all nodded, bowing a bit to avoid the harsh gaze he directed toward them. Tzuyu threw a glance filled with hatred at Sophia, making her feel awful. Lennox walked back into his office, without spearing her a backward glance.

Sophia clutched the bill until her knuckles turned white. "That darn jerk. "

Lennox froze as he stepped out of his office, his gaze slipping to his assistant, who seemed to brighten the spot that she occupied. Her smile was radiant, What was she happy about? even after how I scolded her earlier.

Lennox looked over at the other workers who were all busy at their desks, except Sophia. She had earbuds on, probably listening to music.

Sensing his presence, she looked up, meeting his gaze, her eyes widened as she took out the earbuds in a rush, grabbing her schedule pad. He shook his head, heading towards the elevator, not wanting to hear her say anything that he already knew about.

Lennox got in before she could get a word out of her mouth.

The elevator pinged close, giving him some moment of reprieve. She rubbed him the wrong way, and he couldn't pinpoint the reason why it was that way. The business meeting turned out better than he thought it would, the investor hadn't bargained much before they agreed to his terms, but he felt like bricks were being banged on his head.

Lennox returned to his office, ignoring his assistant, but once he got in, he knew something was off. Lennox's heart almost ceased as he saw the glass of smoothie on his desk. Memories he wanted to bury forever crashed around his head, darkening his vision.

"Sophia" he yelled for her, his hands trembling as he rounded his desk, staring at the offending item. The door opened and she came in with her bright smile. It was as if she was glad that he had called for her. It twisted at something deep within him that he refused to acknowledge.

"What is this" he pointed at the drink, his jaw clenched, trying his hardest to suppress the rage that clouded his vision like a fog of smoke. Lennox wanted to smash something. His hands clenched, finding nothing but air to grab onto.

"A mixture of fruit smoothie. Your rule said no coffee, so I decided to get you this instead" she answered like it was common knowledge. Like she'd done nothing wrong.

"I told you not to serve me anything" he gritted out. "You'll obey all my rules, Sophia, if you can't then you get out of my fucking company.

Don't try to think, because nothing you ever think to do for me will make me feel better, definitely not your stupid smoothie" he got out, emotions threatening to choke him as he grabbed the glass in fury.

He didn't realize throwing the content at her until it trailed down her brightly colored dress. She jerked, gasping in surprise. Those eyes are on me, accusing, blaming me for everything. His hands trembled. "Get out.

Get out of my office" he bellowed. She looked like she was going to cry. She rushed out of the office.

It was difficult to breathe. I hadn't meant... Hadn't meant to... To get so mad. The door slamming open sliced through his thought. His eyes snapped towards the intruder. It was Sophia. She looked furious as she approached him, stopping at the front of his desk, the only barrier between them.

"Do you think I'll quit if you treat me like this?, No Mr.

Lennox, I am going to serve you with my very last strength, and when my six months is up, I'll walk out that door, and never look back, so do your fucking worst" she grabbed at the glass cup, and walked out of the office, banging the door till it almost shook on its hinges, then quietness enveloped his office, seeping through his bones, eerie In their sudden intensity.

She had such determination that It silenced him, telling him to take notice. Goosebumps trailed his skin. What was wrong with her? What was wrong with me? Why did I get so mad whenever I saw her, or if she did the littlest of things?

Was it because she was disrupting my life like someone I once knew, someone I tried to change for, someone I let my selfishness kill. He clenched his fist, drowning the thought before it could fester and choke him. The hurt never left.

It got stronger, but Lennox would never admit it to anyone, instead, he would let everyone feel and wish they were dead. The thought was comforting, no matter how brief, or was it just wishful thinking.

"He's such an asshole!" Andria shot out of her seat like a raging bull about to charge at its prey. "What's he going to do next, hit you across the face for checking his mails". She slammed at the desk, making the rest jump in their seats. Bianka touched her hand gently, eyeing the vicinity, Andria followed her gaze, sitting down after she took in the suddenly interested crowd that glued their eyes to their tables, desperate for gossip.

"Look, if he doesn't want you to do anything, then just sit tight and wait it out". Bianca suggested, her eyes moving towards Sana for support, but she remained quiet.

"I can't do that. You all know how crazy I get when I have nothing to do, and my guts tell me that this is some sort of test I need to pass, plus I can always sue him for assault if he lays hands on me, but I don't think he's that violent."

Andria crossed her arm, her face squeezed like she'd taken a sour lemon. "You can't sue when you're dead" she murmured under her breath.

"I'm sure it won't get to that Andria." Bianca rolled her eyes, before sighing tiredly. "Why are we stuck with such awful bosses. Mine works me like a slave. I wish I work for Mr. Lennox, God knows I won't even bother with doing anything".

Sana grimaced. "Party freak, that's my boss's middle name. He also wants his hands on everything he fancies. The only thing he hasn't asked me to do is play stripper for his business associates. What if I was married, how would my husband feel" Sana's shoulders slumped in defeat. The atmosphere felt stuffed with oppression.

"That's true" Bianca agreed, picking at her salads. "At least they pay us on time" she pointed out, earning their nods of admittance.

"And some of us get a double paycheck" Sana breathed, eyes cutting at Sophia.

"I saw that look Sana. The said double paycheck doesn't cover his rude attitude".

"Our food is getting cold, and all this depressing atmosphere is not helping me" Andria muttered, stabbing at her steak, before bringing it to her lips. She chewed happily, her eyes lightening up. "You need to taste this" she squealed, nudging at Sana's shoulders eagerly. Sana shrugged her off, but conceded, taking a bite of the steak. Her face cheered up when she focused on Sophia and Bianka.

"She's right. This is so good".

"I ain't missing out on this" Bianca got out, taking a huge bite. She moaned in satisfaction, making Sophia roll her eyes, not joining in.

"What are you going to do about Mr. Lennox," Andria asked, after moments of them just savoring the meal, plunging the atmosphere back into despondency.

"I don't know girls. I've tried to be all nice, but it's not working. It's like he's a closed offisland, nothing gets through to him". Sophia wailed, clutching at her hair.

Andria waved her fork around. "One piece of advice, don't do the smoothie thing again. You can't be changing clothes every afternoon".

"You're right about that. Maybe I'll just go early to work, finish my duties and get the hell out of his way".

"Does he live the door open? " Bianca queried, snatching at Sophia's fries.

Sophia mulled it over. His door was always closed during work hours, so what were the odds he left them open. "I think so, but he's so strung up, loves his freaking privacy, and silence thingy, that's why no one knows anything about him."

"Make sure you don't get caught snooping around. He might strangle you to death, and throw your body in the toilet" Andria singssong when the alarm rang, signaling the end of their free hour. They quickly rushed to put their stuff away, getting up to leave.

Bianca turned to face her. "Heed Andria's advice ok, your boss might lowkey be a psychopath, waiting to strike."

"Now y'all are just exaggerating everything, and making me scared".

Sana slung her bag over her shoulders. "I gotta jet, my boss might not be Mr. Lennox, but he's in his evil category. See y'all later ok," she hurried out of the cafeteria before they could say goodbye.

They all took off until Sophia stood in the middle of the emptying cafe. "Ugh. Why me?". She wailed, trudging toward the elevator, she got in, punching in the number to the top floor, which she likened to a grandlooking cage. Sophia sighed miserably. Everything felt almost too hard. I just have to hang in there for six months, make him depend on me to the point that he'd beg me not to leave, she reminded herself. She would achieve her goal, she promised herself. No matter what it took.

"Why is he so fucking agitated". Sophia murmured as she stood by Lennox's door, listening as Len paced around the office. Sophia clutched her schedule pad tighter as she waited. The door pushed open, causing her to back away. Lennox stepped out of his office, startled as he took notice of her, but then he was striding off towards the elevator. She rushed after him, almost shouting his schedule at him in a rush.

"...

By noon, you have a business meeting with the men from the LC branch to plan the new strategy for producing the new batch of fabrics that would be used for the summer collection, you have your free hour by two pm for lunch and doctors appointment... " She almost stumbled into him as he halted abruptly in front of the elevator, Sophia quickly got it for him before he could, his finger coming to rest on her.

He jerked away from the contact, his full glare directed at her. Lennox entered the elevator, not speaking a word to her. The door closed making Sophia swear. She ran out of the office, trudging down the stairlike her pants were on fire.

She knew she wouldn't get there in time, so she jumped on the smooth rails of the stairs and then pushed forward. She slipped down the rail, almost dizzy at the speed. She reached the end, tumbling off and almost hitting her head on the wall.

After steadying herself, she rushed towards the elevator, passing some of the workers and security, everyone minded their business, not sparing her a glance. The elevator pinged open.

Lennox's eye widened just a fraction as he saw her standing before him. He stepped out.

"At four o'clock, you have a dinner scheduled with Mr. Vince, a friend of yours from high school... That would be all sir" she heaved a breath, her chest burning from the exertion. He stared past her without saying a word or acknowledging that she was there. Lennox walked away, leaving her to stare after him. Sophia swore, almost clawing at her face with her nails.

"Oh my God, he is such a jerk". Sophia sighed, she felt like pulling out his hair or something. She stepped into the elevator, pressing for the first floor. Her gaze darted as she took notice of Andria and her boss, walking out of the company, looking cozy as they conversed, stealing secret glances at each other before the elevator cut off her visual. "Wish he was my boss, this is so frustrating ugh".

CLUB

The neon lightning flashed making Andria wince as she poured drinks for her boss and his associates, she served each, forcing herself to smile. She watched her boss as he laughed, head thrown back. A real smile replaced the forced one Andria had been forcing.

Peter, one of the associates, cleared his throat, raising his glass. "A toast for more deals to come".

They all nodded, clicking glasses against the other. Markus turned to face Andria.

"Pretty Andria, how long have you been working with this awful guy," he asked, pointing at Jonathan, her boss.

Andria smiled, refilling his glass. "Two years sir, but Mr. Jonathan is not awful. He's the best".

Marcus smirked. "That's just for show", he said, then looked her over. "You're really beautiful Andria".

Andria felt Jonathan get tense beside her. "Thank you, sir, Markus, you're also really goodlooking". Markus leaned towards her, but before he could say anything, Jonathan slapped his back, laughing nervously.

"Hey, back off. Don't compliment my assistant, go get yours".

Markus ignored him with a mischievous gaze directed at Andria. "Why don't you come work for me, Andria, how about a triple paycheck of whatever he pays you".

"Come work for me, I'll pay four times what Markus here wants to offer you" Peter interjected, staring intensely at Andria.

Andria cut glances at Jonathan who had his fist clenched, watching both men as if he wanted to murder them. Andria looked back at the two men who were expectantly waiting for her reply.

"I quite like my job and the amount I'm being paid, so I'm sorry, but I'll have to decline both your offers". She answered and felt Jonathan relax beside her.

"Nice try, but my assistant is faithful to her boss". His gaze fell on Andria, she smiled at him. Markus watched both of them skeptically.

"You two look like you're in a relationship, is that a good thing?" He asked, forcing Andria's gaze to snap in his direction nervously, but it was Jonathan who spoke first.

"Don't be ridiculous, I can never date an ordinary assistant, what sort of nonsense is it, I don't need any baseless rumors spreading about me Markus, besides I have my fiance waiting for me, she's studying right now, so fucking drop it ok".

"So defensive. Andria, see I told you your boss was awful. You should consider my offer" he said but Andria just kept her head bowed, as Jonathan's words sank home. Jonathan drank more wine, laughing too hard even when the joke wasn't all that funny.

I will not cry, not here, or anywhere, Andria told herself, as she inhaled and exhaled deeply to get rid of the prominent pain in her chest. Andria forced herself to chin up as she drove towards the company parking lot, she didn't want the others to see her and start to ask questions. Andria found an empty spot and parked.

"That's all for today sir, should I call your driver to take you home, or do you prefer to drive yourself".

"I didn't mean what I said earlier, I'm sorry, you know that right". His voice cut through the silence, making Andria jerk to face him. Jonathan leaned towards her, reaching for her hand, but she slapped his hand off. Her eyes snapped to his, her anger getting the best of her.

"Don't touch me, I am just the ordinary assistant you can't stand to be with anyway".

His face twisted in pain. "I'm sorry Andria, but you can't say this is all my fault, you don't want the world to find out about us right, they'll gossip behind our back, say shit about us that you don't want to hear".

"Well if you truly love me, you won't be ashamed or get so defensive, or make up an imaginary fiance just to explain why you can't ever be with me" she accused, her eyes burning.

"I'm not ashamed of you".

"Of course, you'll say that, but we've been dating for a year now, and no one knows about us, not even my best friends, do you think that's healthy, how long are we going to keep this up, huh".

He took her hand soothingly, his grip tightened when she made to pull away. "Not for long, Andria, just give me a little more time".

She wrenched her hands away. "No Nathan, you've been saying that forever, at least Peter and Markus are not ashamed of me, maybe I might just consider their offer." She threatened, watching as Jonathan's gaze darkened, a muscle jerking at his temple.

"You don't mean that Andria. You love me".

"Yeah I do, but do you love me?" She asked, he was quick to reply, but she shushed him before he could speak. "Think it over before you answer that Jonathan because I don't feel that you love me at all". She pushed open the door, walking out before the broken look on his face crumbled her resolve.

Lennox scanned the menu but nothing caught his gaze, Vince waited patiently as the server fidgeted beside them. Lennox motioned the server closer, pointing at what he wanted. The server left, grateful to be out of their presence.

"You're making everyone uncomfortable with your scowling. Stop ruining a dinner we haven't even started yet".

"I'm not scowling, I'm just tense today".

A small grin tugged on Vince's lips. "Why? Did you fight with your girlfriend or what".

Lennox flinched, his gaze fixed on the champagne flute, and jaws clenched. "I think I should leave, I don't have an appetite anymore" he got out, proceeding to stand before Vince reached out to stop him. Lennox remained seated, watching Vince's features tighten as he got serious, his fingers that were clad with expensive diamond rings running through his hair in frustration.

"It's been six years Lennox, I thought you'd be better now, haven't you moved on yet?"

"We both know I can never move on, or forget about what happened six years ago, I know you haven't forgotten either..."

Vince smashed his hand on the table, whispering fiercely. "Melissa was my sister Lennox, but you're making me feel shitty all over again because I did move on, I forgave you".

Lennox's jaw set. "You didn't love her as I did, you didn't watch her die, you didn't kill her".

Vince groaned, dragging his hands through his hair frustratingly. "Neither did you god damn it? I loved Melissa, but it was an accident, an accident that no one saw coming." He seized a deep breath as he took in Lennox's unwavering mask of pain. "No matter how much I repeat this to you, it won't help would it. You need to move on Lennox, this is not healthy. No one is holding you back, Melissa isn't either".

Lennox stood up, picking up his case. Vince watched him helplessly. "I'm done here. I will never forget about Melissa, I can't move on, not when I'm a murderer. I hurt everyone close to me, so you should stay away if you want to live a long life".

"That's bullshit Lennox and you know it. You don't mean that right?"

Lennox's gaze was stoic. "I mean everything I said. Stop scheduling all these meetings, it just makes me more suffocated than I already am". Lennox gave a clipped bow, walking out of the restaurant.

Vince looked around, noticing pairs of eyes who had been watching their exchange. He sighed, burying his head into his phone.

Lennox walked back home, Melissa's voice ringing in his head as he remembered their last moment together.

"Let go of me Len, let the fuck go" she screamed at him, her eyes clouding up with unshed tears. He let go reluctantly, wanting to hold onto her even if it was just a little bit. "Why are you doing this Len, haven't I tried enough. I've done all I can Len, and I'm tired of trying for you. You're just a coldhearted man, you're an empty shell who can't force yourself to feel even just a spec of love for me". Her word twisted something in Lennox's chest.

"I am not, I love you, believe me, I do. It's just because I was raised different, that's why I find it hard to show my feelings, but you know I try hard for you right".

Melissa shoved at him, raising her voice another octave. "You wouldn't have to try so hard if you love me. I can't stay with a man who has to try before he can love me" she said and made to go, but he stopped her, grabbing onto her shoulder.

She whirled around, slapping him across the face. He cupped his cheek, the sting of her slap registering, as his ears rang.

Melissa gave him a nasty challenging look, then walked away from their house, moving towards her car that was parked on the other side of the road.

Len watched her, his heart twisting in his chest, that was until he saw the truck heading straight for her. He shouted her name, running towards her, Willing the truck to move slower.

It didn't happen, Melissa turned as she heard her name, making him stagger to a stop in his steps. The truck rammed into her, the force of it lifting her above the ground, then smacked her against the tiled road.

The truck accelerated, swerving as it drove off.

Melissa rolled until her back hit her parked car. Lennox snapped out of his trance, running towards her, his body trembling as he crouched down in horror. He gathered her in his arms dialing the emergency contact on his phone.

His voice shook as he relayed what happened, begging them to hurry up before the phone dropped from his hand. Melissa's blood seeped into his clothes, drenching them as he cradled her head against his chest.

She coughed out blood as he held her, tucking the hair sticking to her face behind her ear. A darkening bruise marred the side of her face. Lennox felt shaken, his head refusing to believe what had happened.

"Melissa, please... Don't leave me... I am so sorry, so very sorry, this is all my fault, all my fault" he felt hot tears trailing down his cheek. Melissa stared at him, eyes glazed in pain.

"This is..." She gasped, clutching at his shirt. "I'm dying, Len... You... Let this happen... Don't... Don't... Le... let me... go". Her grasp wavered, even when she tried harder to hold onto him. "Len... Lennox... You... You have to save me... Save...". Her grasp slipped, her eyes shutting, forever.

Lennox shook his head in disbelief. "Melissa... Melissa" he tapped on her cheek, looking around wildly for the ambulance that said they were on their way. "Melissa, don't do this to me, just hang in there a little ok. You'll be fine. I'll save you, I promise. Melissa" he roared, pulling her into a tight hug. "Melissa!".

The siren of the ambulance sounded distant in his ears, the world was just one hazy place after she left him. He couldn't keep his promise. He couldn't save her.

Lennox held his head wincing from the pain that came with the memory. He hated whirling sounds, or any loud noises, they made him remember. His house was always quiet, he'd replaced the once bright colors that Melissa painted the wall with darker shades. It reflected his life. An empty hollow space.

He took off his suit, loosening his tie as he sank into the sofa, staring at the immaculate house. He could see Melissa everywhere even after he'd altered the room.

Her bright smile as she flaunted a new dress, the grace with which she walked in heels, her golden wavy hair that always fanned her face like a halo.

He could remember how she always went out of her way to make him happy, she dressed up as a clown for him once and acted like a Disney princess another time as she put on a show for him.

Her clever advice, her help with the company, her loud laugh, her beautiful twinkling eyes when she smiled. He'd changed the house but it didn't stop her from haunting him. He was responsible for her death.

That guilt would never go away even if he moved across the ocean. Living in solitude was his punishment, but he wanted it that way. He deserved to live like that.

He did leave his door open when he was not in the office. Sophia smiled, entering his office with a bag filled with the items that she had gotten to add more color to the office.

The space of the room never ceased to amaze her, and the view from the window was spectacular, if only he left the shades up. He had a closet beside his desk which was insanely cool, the sliding door was decorated with a dark leafy pattern.

Sophia couldn't resist getting a peak. She pushed the door open, taking stock of the neatly arranged shirts, suits, shoes, and other accessories. He should move into his office, cause I don't see why he has a house anymore.

She shrugged the thought off, bringing out a disposable smoothie cup filled with strawberry smoothie_just because she wanted to piss him off, but make him happy at the same time, she arranged his files, dusted the furniture then placed the small flower pot with a cactus on his desk.

Why a cactus? Because he was a prickly ba... Sophia stopped herself from insulting him, cringing internally at how much energy it took to pause her words.

She placed a note underneath it on how to take care of the poor plant_poor because she was sure he wouldn't even spare it a glance before tossing it into the trashcan.

Sophia's gaze slithered towards the huge glass windows that overlooked the city, the sun was rising on the horizon. She walked towards it almost in a daze as she took in its breathtaking beauty of it.

Sophia watched the cloud move, the light ray of the sun streaking through, creating a beautiful effect, she closed her eyes savoring the moment. The sound of footsteps echoed making her jump.

Sophia looked at her watch, she had come early at quarter to five to be ahead of him, and do what needed to be done, yet he still caught up to her.

Sophia looked around frantically in search of an escape, her heart beating rapidly in her chest making her dizzy. Where to hide, where to fucking hide, she chanted in her head, pulling at her hair in the process.

Her gaze slipped toward the closet and she rushed towards it, sliding it open.

Sophia rushed inside without thinking, then shut the door, willing her heart to beat at the normal rate. His scent enveloped her, making her inhale deeply, but the footsteps closing in on her had her heart pounding so hard in her chest that she thought she was going to have a heart attack. She took calming breaths, praying that he didn't have anything to do with the closet when he came in.

Lennox entered his office, stopping in his tracks as he took in the subtle difference in his office. The cup on his desk registered, making him swear. He walked towards it, picking it up.

His eye caught the scribbled writing. 'toss it and you'll go straight to hell'. It would have been hilarious, but he couldn't find any humor in the situation. She had disobeyed his order once again.

Lennox's gaze slipped to the foreign object on his table, a cactus plant, then he saw the note underneath it. Lennox took it up, clutching at the smoothie.

"Do not toss it in the trashcan, water the little guy at least twice a week, and make sure you expose it to sunlight for at least four hours per day. Its name is Lennox Jr, so he'll be your little brother and you can vent to him whenever you feel down. I hope we work together for a very long time".

With love, from your assistant.

Lennox glanced around, eyeing everything he had in his office and noticing that she'd messed with most of his stuff, everything was arranged in an orderly fashion, and he knew because he had deliberately left some of his files spread out on his desk.

Lennox stepped outside the office, looking around for Sophia, but he couldn't sense a soul. He could smell a subtle springlike scent in the air, and he was sure of who they belonged.

He walked back into the office, pushed the door close, and took a deep breath as he rested his head against the door. His assistant was damn annoying.

Lennox walked towards his desk and grabbed the plant pot. He strode to the window, placing the cactus where the sunray would hit it. Lennox paused, surprised at his action.

He cocked his head, then looked out of the window, the beauty of the sunrise caught him by surprise. Lennox inhaled sharply, filling his lungs with air, before he released it, expelling his anger.

He could admit to himself that he loved the plant, they were a favorite of his hence why he couldn't force himself to toss them into the trashcan.

He'd mostly kept the window shaded in the early hours of the morning, but now he could see what it was that he had been missing, the calming effect it had on him.

Lennox felt like cool water was rushing over his skin as he watched the sun taking its place in the sky, he unconsciously put the straw to his lips, sipping at the smoothie before he could think better of it.

The flavor was rich, coating his tongue as he swallowed. It was delicious, so he took more sips, his anger draining from his shoulder.

The assistant was stubborn, persistent, and darn right irritating but he had to admit that he hadn't felt such relaxation in a long while. Lennox inhaled deeply, enjoying the calmness. His phone buzzed startling him.

He strode back to his desk, dropping the smoothie as he read through his message. He walked towards the closet, sliding it open halfway. The scent of citrus wafted towards him, making him pause.

He pushed the door until his eyes landed on the wide eyes of the culprit, who had her hand pressed against her lips to avoid screaming. She froze like Lennox would think she was one of his suits.

Realizing that her tactics were not going to work, she stepped out of the closet with a nervous smile, her head almost dragging against the floor.

Lennox masked his surprise, clearing his throat. "What were you doing in there?". He asked, his expression neutral. She squeezed at the bag she held.

"I was..." she swallowed audibly. "I was searching for my schedule pad" she blurted, before thinking about it through.

Lennox's lips quirked. "In my closet? And what about the smoothie" he picked it up from the table, thrusting it in front of her. "Who arranged my stuff, or that ugly looking plant"

Sophia's eyes darted around, her knuckles whitening at the pressure she applied to them. "Umm... Why that was... That was... I did it.. but, I didn't mean to stay longer here... I was just" she stuttered through her words until Lennox stopped her with a raised hand, having heard enough of her rambling.

"You were just looking for your schedule pad, am I right?". She nodded quickly. "I'm too busy to take care of the plant so that will be your responsibility. If Lennox Jr dies, it will be your fault". He told, deciding to cut her some slack.

Sophia's mouth hung open for a second like she couldn't believe the words that came out of his mouth. Lennox didn't understand why he was humoring her either.

"What! I mean yes, I'll take care of it, Sir".

He watched her for longer than necessary before he snapped out of his daze.

"You can go to your desk now, your schedule pad is on your table". He pointed at it through the raised shutters that overlooked her desk, Sophia's gaze trailed in the direction, she released a nervous laugh as she saw it lying on her desk.

"Oh right. It skipped my brain, happens all the time" she joked, taking backward steps until she got to the door, she pulled it open stepping out of the office before clicking it shut.

Lennox shook his head, then blinked as he realized In horror that he had been smiling.
