Aria’s Pov

“Please… please come get me. I'll do anything, I need to leave this place,” I sobbed into the phone as I clenched it tightly.

A sharp worried voice sounded immediately, “What’s wrong, Aria? Are you hurt?”

I wiped my tears and cleared my throat, “I’m fine. I'm just done with this sham.”

“When should I come?” the voice asked.

“Come in three days time,” I answered.

“This is the last time, Aria, don't disappoint me.”

The call ended with a click and I stood up from the floor I was sprawled on.

“Aria, you're free to go,” the nurse said to me.

I nodded and smiled at her before I limped out of the hospital.

I hailed a cab to take me home as I scrolled through my phone hoping for a text message or phone call but there was nothing.

I wasn't sad, it would make leaving very easier, I mused.

I stepped out of the cab and entered the house I've lived in like a stranger for the past three years.

My father was in the sitting room watching a football match.

He barely spared me a glance before yelling at me, “Get out of the way you useless thing!”

I stepped away from the television and he continued watching his match.

“You couldn't even help us catch a stalker. You're as useless as your dead mother!!” he hissed.

The bedroom door opened and I saw Austin coming out with my stepsister, Mira who was giggling and holding him.

The moment they saw me they pulled away from each other and Austin cleared his throat before frowning.

I smiled bitterly, there was no need to deny it. Three weeks ago, I already saw the video and found out that he has been sleeping with Mira.

“Why are you back here? You didn't help us catch the stalker that has been stalking Mira,” Austin barked at me.

“Perhaps if any of you had picked their call I would have been able to catch the stalker,” I said quietly.

I felt a sharp sting on my left cheeks as stars appeared in my line of vision.

Blinking back the tears, I saw my father standing before me angrily.

“You ungrateful bitch!” he barked, “Are you trying to blame us for your failure, huh? Same way you tried blaming Mira for framing you when you almost ran my company into the ground! You goodfornothing ingrate, maybe you should have just died alongside your mother and brother!”

My heart broke at his words but I kept quiet. It wasn't the first time he was wishing I had died with my mother.

But my brother’s death was so fresh how could he say this?

I blinked back the tears just as Mira’s voice sounded.

“Oh, papa, please don't say that. It’s not Aria’s fault she's not good at business and can only play with her beads,” Mira said in a sweet voice but I knew she was mocking me, “It’s also not her fault the stalker escaped, at least he's not bothering me again.”

“Stop defending her, Mira, you give her too much credit. Your father is right and she's worthless. I feel ashamed to introduce her as my wife which is why she's a secret,” Austin said coldly.

I stared at Austin and my heart broke more. Austin Harrington, the boy I've loved for twelve years.

Austin never spared me a glance until three years ago after Mira broke his heart—abandoned him at the altar and disappeared.

Drenched in rain, I had gone in search of him when he almost jumped off a cliff out of embarrassment and heartbreak.

That night he slept with me and I let him. Even though he was heavily drunk and sad but I've loved him long enough I didn't care.

The following morning he claimed I saved his life and asked me to marry him.

Without thinking twice I agreed. Six months into the marriage, Mira returned filled with sorrow and asked for his forgiveness.

He assured me he wouldn't look at her and I had nothing to worry about but he was deceiving me.

He had accepted Mira and they've been having an affair right under my nose while he treated me coldly and kept our marriage a secret.

Three weeks ago I was forced to lure Mira’s stalker out and while I ran away from the stalker, Mira sent me twentytwo sex videos of her and Austin in one night.

Even while I was at the hospital being stitched up from the knife wounds the stalker inflicted, my phone kept buzzing with more video messages from Mira.

“Did you die or something?” Austin’s cold voice sounded as he snapped his fingers in my face.

I blinked and smiled, “What is it, love?”

He wrinkled his face, “Don’t call me that! I’m going for a business meeting with Mira and your father. Don't wait up.”

“Yeah, maybe if you weren't so dumb you might have actually joined us,” my father mocked.

They laughed and walked away. Immediately they were gone, I sighed and sat down on the couch.

I brought out my phone and started scrolling through Facebook to contact someone when I saw a post I was tagged to. It was an unknown account that tagged me.

I opened the post and a photo of Austin and Mira popped up.

They were holding hands in front of a courthouse three weeks ago, exactly a day after the stalker’s incident.

Mira in a white dress. Austin in a gray suit.

Between them—a framed ultrasound.

The caption:

“Just wedded and soon to be 3 #LoveAlwaysWins”

I stared at the screen for so long it dimmed.

So on the day I was fighting for my life in the hospital, my stepsister and my husband had gotten married and my father witnessed it.

As if that's not enough she's also pregnant for him and here I am still his secret and worthless wife.

I didn’t cry. I called the lawyer.

“This is Aria Harrington,” I said. “I’m ready to file for divorce.”

“Are you sure this is what you want, Aria? You insisted on this wedding,” the lawyer said.

I nodded, “Yes, my decision is final.”

“Alright. I'll mail the documents to you and you both have to sign it and send it back to me in two days so I can finalize it,” the lawyer said.

“Don’t worry, I will find a way to get Austin to sign the document,” I said.

The front door swung open as Austin walked in with a frown.

“Get me to sign what?!” he barked.

Aria’s Pov

“What are you getting me to sign, Aria?”

Austin’s voice cut through the silence like a slap across the face.

I froze, caught off guard. The phone was still warm against my ear. I ended the call quickly.

“I asked you something,” he said again, stepping closer.

I held the phone tighter. “Why are you back?” I asked, forcing my voice steady. “Wasn’t the meeting supposed to take time?”

“You’re dodging.” His eyes narrowed. “Who were you talking to?”

“The doctor,” I lied. “The hospital needed some forms signed.”

He reached for the phone and tried unlocking it. I didn’t panic—at least not visibly.

“What’s your password?”

“My birthday.”

He typed it in. Nothing happened. He frowned and tried again.

“Why isn’t this working? Isn’t your birthday June third?”

I smiled. Bitter and quiet. “That’s Mira’s birthday.”

He paused.

Three years of marriage. And he didn’t even know.

His voice turned sheepish. “Oh. I get those mixed up sometimes.”

I met his gaze. “Three years together, and you still confuse me with her.”

He sighed. “You know how I am with dates.”

“But not hers,” I whispered. “You’ve never forgotten hers. Even after she left you at the altar.”

“That’s enough,” Austin snapped, his tone turning sharp. “Mira apologized. You’re the one holding on to the past.”

I didn’t reply. I just brushed past him and walked upstairs.

The room that used to be ours had become mine alone the moment Mira moved in.

I sat on the edge of the bed, opened my jewelry box, and pulled out the velvet pouch.

My mother’s brooch. Silver filigree. One missing stone.

It wasn’t worth much. But it was the last thing I had of her.

The only thing no one had stolen yet.

I tucked it carefully into a satin case, then I heard the front door open.

“I’m back!” Mira’s voice floated up, sweet and laced with venom. “Papa insisted we stop at that new boutique. You wouldn’t believe how stunning the designs are.”

My father’s voice followed. “Mira knows quality. Not like Aria.”

I gritted my teeth.

Footsteps approached. Mira appeared in my doorway, shopping bags swinging from her wrists.

“Are you packing up already?” she asked innocently.

I said nothing.

She strolled in like she owned the room and opened my drawer. “Still holding on to Jamie’s stuff? Let it go, Aria. He’s dead.”

I slammed the drawer shut. “Don’t touch that.”

Her smile sharpened. “Why not? You don’t have anything else left, do you?”

“I’ll leave soon,” I said quietly. “Then you can have everything you’ve ever wanted.”

“Oh, no,” she said, stepping closer, “I haven’t gotten everything yet.”

Then she screamed.

A shrill, highpitched sound, and suddenly she dropped to the floor, grabbing her wrist.

“I’m sorry, Aria! I didn’t mean to ask for it! Please don’t hurt me!”

Footsteps thundered upstairs. Austin and my father appeared at the door.

“What the hell happened?!” my father barked.

“She hit me,” Mira sniffled. “I only asked her if I could have her mother’s brooch for my nightmares. I thought since we’re sisters—”

“You selfish bitch!” Austin growled, glaring at me. “Give it to her! Why do you have to make everything a big deal?”

“That’s all I have left of my mother,” I whispered.

My father’s voice cut through me like a knife. “Your mother was a selfish bitch. And you’re no better.”

Tears blurred my vision. My hands trembled as I opened the satin box.

I remembered my mother’s voice.

“Guard it with your life, darling. It’s our family crest. It’ll protect you when I can’t.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat and handed it over.

Mira smiled like a child getting candy. Then—“Oops.”

The brooch slipped from her fingers. Hit the floor. Cracked into pieces.

“You broke it,” I breathed. “You broke it.”

“I’m sorry, Aria,” she said, holding her hand. “You gave it to me with bad intentions. See? I’m bleeding.”

Austin rushed to her side. “Let me see your palm. You’re hurt. I knew she was spiteful.”

They hovered over her like she was glass.

My hands clenched at my sides. “It was an accident. You saw—”

“Enough!” my father growled. “You’ve always been jealous. You’re pathetic.”

Mira turned to me, ”I’m sorry, Aria, let me help you.”

Then she knelt beside me and lowering her voice, she whispered, “Oh, Aria. You want to know why the hospital ‘rerouted’ the transplant?”

My blood went cold.

Her whisper slid into my ear. “Austin paid them off. Told them the donor heart meant for your brother should be given to me.”

“You didn’t need it,” I said shakily, “You weren't sick.”

She smiled. “I know but they didn't know. I just wanted to see the only family that loves you dead.”

She stood up. “Oops again.”

Her elbow knocked into the small urn on the shelf—Jamie’s ashes.

It fell and shattered.

Ashes spilled across the floor.

Something inside me snapped.

I slapped her. Hard.

Her scream split the air. “She hit me!”

Austin’s hand came fast. I barely saw it before it collided with my cheek.

Pain exploded behind my eye. I stumbled back.

My father’s cane struck next—slammed into my ribs.

I crumpled.

“You ungrateful little bitch,” he spat. “All this fuss over a worthless urn.”

I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move.

My breath came in short gasps.

No one reached for me.

No one noticed the blood on my lip. Or the tears slipping past my lashes.

Rather they helped Mira, treating her like a fragile doll.

I closed my eyes.

Three more days.

And I’d be gone forever.

Aria’s Pov

I woke up to the smell of antiseptic wafting through my nose. Groaning softly, I opened my eyes to see the white ceiling of the hospital.

I sat up on the bed and cried out in pain. My ribs still hurt from where my father had struck me.

The door opened and a nurse came inside, smiling at me.

“Aria, you've become a frequent visitor in this hospital,” she said jokingly.

“What happened?” I groaned, smiling sheepishly.

“A cleaner brought you here. She said she saw you passed out on the floor in your house,” the nurse explained.

A bitter smile crossed my lips as I stared at the nurse and nodded.

So they couldn't even be bothered to bring me to the hospital. They left me there for the cleaners to find me.

“Is there anything you wanna tell me, Aria?” the nurse asked.

I frowned, “What do you mean?”

“You showed up here with three broken ribs, Aria, and a few weeks ago you showed up here with multiple stab injuries. Are you being abused at home?” the nurse asked gently.

I chuckled sadly, “I’m fine. It was an accident, I can take care of myself.”

The nurse sighed, “Well, don't have any more ‘accidents’ Aria because the next one could be fatal for your pregnancy,” she stated.

My eyes were filled with tears as I touched my stomach.

Three weeks ago after treatment the nurse had told me that I was pregnant and lucky that my child had survived.

I still recalled vividly how I had gotten pregnant. It was a rainy night and Austin had come back late and drunk.

He was so drunk he thought I was Mira—and I let him believe it. Just for one night, I wanted to feel wanted. I was a fool.

When he woke up the following day he had acted so coldly toward me and even accused me of seducing him.

“You’re three months pregnant, Aria, you're very lucky you didn't lose your child,” the doctor had told me that night.

If Mira hadn't sent me those videos maybe I would have been excited.

And even when I got better I decided to keep the baby and leave but after seeing the picture I saw online and hearing Mira’s vile words, I knew I wouldn't have the heart to have this baby.

How could I raise a child and keep looking at the child whose father killed my little brother in cold blood?

“Aria?” the nurse snapped her fingers in my face, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“I have decided that I want an abortion, Nurse, I don't want to keep the baby again,” I said to her.

The nurse stared at me like I had gone mad.

“An abortion?! Your baby is already four months old,” she said.

I shrugged, “I have made my decision. Please give me the necessary forms to fill.”

“But… What about the baby daddy? Your husband?” the nurse asked worriedly.

I shook my head, “I don't have a husband and the baby daddy is dead.”

The nurse nodded, “Since you're so sure I’ll arrange for the paperwork.”

The nurse left and arrived shortly with some forms. I filled the forms and agreed to have the procedure done.

The nurse stared at me before collecting the form, “Are you certain, Aria?”

I nodded, “Now can I go?”

She smiled, “Of course, you're free to go. Come back tomorrow for the procedure.”

I grabbed my phone that was on the table and saw a series of missed calls from the number I had called earlier followed by a message.

‘I’m worried, Aria, why aren't you picking my calls?’

‘I've booked your flight.’

‘Still no response. I can't wait anymore, I'm on a flight to meet you. I'll pick you up myself.’

I smiled as I sent a quick message to him then I checked my phone. No other messages from my father or Austin, not even Mira.

I left the hospital room and headed outside but stopped when I heard Mira’s voice.

“Yes, he's super sweet,” she was saying.

I turned to see Mira and Austin in the hospital room as a doctor checked Mira.

“I’m so glad you have a supportive husband to help you through your pregnancy, Mira,” the doctor was saying.

Right before my eyes, Austin kissed Mira, “It’s my pleasure, Mira completes me.”

I stumbled back and headed to the restroom and threw up.

I was filled with so much disgust. To think that I had loved this guy for twelve years.

The door opened and I heard Mira’s mocking voice.

“Did you enjoy the show? I knew you were snooping outside,” Mira giggled.

“Get out of here, Mira,” I snarled.

“Why won’t you just die, huh? Even after we left you to bleed out on the floor. You're just a pesky little fly that won’t die!” Mira snapped.

“I’ll be out of your way soon, Mira, just leave me alone,” I said.

“Did you know that I ordered the maids to sweep your brother’s ashes and throw them into the bin,” Mira mocked, laughing heartily.

Without thinking, I lunged toward her and grabbed her hair.

“You evil bitch! You killed him and you won't even let him rest in peace,” I snarled.

Mira shrieked, “Help! She's hurting me.”

The door swung open and Austin stepped in, his eyes red and wide with fury.

“What are you doing to her?” he snapped at me.

“She made you kill my brother, Austin, and now she's ruined his ashes. She didn't need the —”

A resounding slap landed on my cheeks nearly blinding me.

“Your brother’s life is nothing compared to the life of Mira,” Austin said coldly.

My mouth hung open in shock as I watched him lead Mira out.

Enraged with fury, I lunged toward them but Austin hand shot out as he punched me causing me to stumble and fall.

My stomach hit the sharp edge of the sink as I crumpled to the floor. A sharp, stabbing pain shot through my abdomen.

I gasped.

Warmth spread between my legs. I looked down and saw blood seeping through my jeans, pooling on the white tiles beneath me.

My heart pounded.

“Austin,” I choked, voice barely a whisper. “Mira… please—help…”

”You could die for all I care!” Austin snapped.

Mira glanced back once, her lips twitching into a smug smile as she mouthed, “Die,” before disappearing down the hall with Austin’s arm around her waist.

Aria’s Pov

I crawled out of the restroom, dragging my body along the cold tiles as blood pooled beneath me. My throat was raw from screaming, but still, I cried out.

“Help… someone… please—”

My vision blurred, the edges of the hallway spinning as a sharp pain twisted through my stomach. It was warm. Wet. Endless.

Footsteps thundered toward me.

“Oh my God—get a stretcher! She’s bleeding out!”

A nurse dropped to her knees beside me, pressing something against my abdomen. My body screamed in pain.

“Stay with me,” she said. “Can you hear me? Aria, stay with me—”

I couldn’t.

Everything faded.

Voices echoed in the darkness.

“She’s lost too much blood—”

“We don’t have time to wait!”

“If we don’t operate now, she won’t make it—”

“Prepare the OR. We’re going in!”

Someone squeezed my hand.

“Just hang on, sweetheart. Stay with us.”

Then, nothing.

I woke to blinding lights and soft beeping. My limbs felt like they were weighed down with stone. My lips were dry. I tried to sit up, but a hand gently stopped me.

A nurse.

She looked at me like I might break again if she said the wrong word.

“Hey… Aria,” she whispered. “You’re okay now.”

I stared at her, my mouth too dry to speak.

“You were hemorrhaging badly,” she said softly. “The doctor… had to remove the baby to save your life.”

My breath caught.

But no tears came.

I just stared at the ceiling, numb.

I had planned to get rid of the baby.

But not like this.

But once again, Austin and Mira had done their worst again.

The nurse reached for my hand. “Do you want me to call someone for you?”

I shook my head slowly. “No one to call.”

The following day, I was discharged and advised to be careful as I was still sore from the surgery.

The hospital air clung to me like bad memories as I stepped out into the sun. I took a cab home, hands clutched tightly around the discharge papers.

When I reached the gate, the house loomed ahead like a stranger’s.

I bent to pick up the mail by the front step and there it was—an envelope with my name scrawled in bold cursive.

Inside:

The divorce agreement.

I smiled to myself. One step closer.

I pushed open the door. No one looked up. Not Austin. Not Mira. Just the television humming softly.

“Why are you here?” Austin hissed at me, not even glancing my way, “I thought you've run away.”

“I live here,” I replied coolly.

He stood, annoyed. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten what happened. You assaulted Mira in the restroom.”

“I remember what happened.”

“Then you owe her an apology.”

I laughed under my breath.

Mira stepped in just then, all fake concern and soft eyes.

“Austin, don’t pressure her. It wasn’t her fault. I shouldn’t have provoked her… I’m really sorry, Aria.”

She extended a shopping bag toward me.

“Please come with us to the company party tonight. I picked out a dress for you. I thought you might want to join us for a bit.”

Austin and my father scoffed at the idea.

“She’ll be in the way,” my father muttered. “She has no use.”

But Mira’s voice was sweeter than syrup. “Please, papa. Let her come. She deserves to have fun too.”

Eventually, they agreed. Because Mira said so.

Later that evening, I walked toward my room and froze by the hallway.

Inside Austin’s study, their voices carried through the halfopen door.

“I’m tired of pretending and hiding our relationship before her, baby,” Mira’s sad voice sounded.

I scoffed and was about to leave but Austin’s cold voice kept me frozen in place.

“The bitch wouldn't just die! Even after we sent the stalker after her she still survived!”

I gripped the railing so hard my knuckles turned white.

They wanted me dead. They’d planned it.

The night I almost died. They sent that stalker after me.

“Even after we still left her to bleed out on the floor of the hospital. She's proving to be like a pesky bug that wouldn't die!” Mira snapped.

“I have a plan. At tonight’s party, I’ll get her drunk and set her up with some random guy who would sleep with her and record it. Then we'd release the sex tape, I’ll divorce and humiliate her then I’ll make us public,” Austin said.

Mira giggled, “That’s a brilliant plan, darling, so even when she speaks out no one will believe the words of a shamed woman.”

My stomach turned. I stepped away quietly, heart pounding.

Back in my room, I dug into the drawer and pulled out the envelope.

I removed the divorce forms. Folded them neatly and went downstairs to meet Austin.

“The hospital asked for a signature,” I said, calm.

He didn’t even read them, he just glared at me, “What am I signing? Why is the hospital asking for my signature?”

“It’s my discharge form. They're asking because you're my next of kin,” I lied.

My father and Austin burst into laughter as he scrawled his signature at the bottom of the paper without reading it.

“What properties do you have to make someone your next of kin?” my father asked mockingly.

“Please remove my name from there I can't be humiliated like that,” Austin mocked and they all laughed.

I took the papers back. “Thanks.”

Inside my closet, I pulled down three packed boxes. Everything I needed to deliver to them at the party tonight.

I grabbed my phone and opened the single contact that mattered.

‘I’m ready. It’s happening tonight.’

I hit send.

Aria’s Pov

“It’s time to go, Aria!” Mira called from downstairs.

I poked out my head and smiled a bit, “I don't want to make you late. You all go ahead, I’ll catch up.”

Mira and Austin looked reluctant to leave and I knew it was because of their evil plan.

“Let’s go, she can use a cab,” my father snapped impatiently.

Mira smiled lovingly at me, “I’ll be waiting for you, Aria.”

Then they left. I waited until the car drove out of the compound before I let out a breath.

Then I grabbed all the pictures and gifts Austin has given me over the years and threw them into the trash.

I called a delivery guy and handed him the three boxes.

“Make sure you deliver this by 8 PM. If they don't open it then open it for them,” I ordered.

The delivery guy nodded as he pocketed the money I gave him and left.

I pulled out the box that had all my designs and I smiled softly.

There was no need to hide them anymore, not when the world was willing to pay a fortune to see them.

My phone beeped and a message popped up on the screen.

‘I’m downstairs.’

I grabbed my box and went downstairs smiling as I entered the Limousine that was parked downstairs.

“Good evening, Mistress, the boss has ordered that we bring you to the airport. His private jet awaits,” the driver said.

I smiled and nodded as I relaxed in the seat and sipped a glass of wine that one of the guards served me.

With a small smile on my lips, I watched the night sky as the car drove me to the airport.

When we arrived at the airport, my phone started buzzing nonstop as numerous messages and calls kept coming in from Austin.

‘Where are you, Aria?’

‘Don’t get me upset, Aria’

‘Aria, don’t ruin tonight with your drama.’

‘I said I’m sorry, okay? Let’s just get through this party.’

‘Pick up your fucking phone, Aria. I swear if you make a scene—’

‘Where the hell are you?’

I silenced the phone and smiled faintly.

By the time I got through security and was led into the private jet, Austin had called fifteen times. Sent eight messages.

The final one blinked on my screen:

’You’ve gone too far. If you don’t show up tonight, it’s over.’

I chuckled as I sat down on the luxurious seat while I was flanked by a series of air hostesses who were ready to attend to my every need.

One tap on my tablet, and the hacked feed of the gala lit up my screen. Front row to the chaos.

The ballroom was filled with warm lights, soft music, and flutes of champagne.

Everyone was dressed in their best. Cameras flashed. Laughter echoed.

Mira stood by Austin’s side in a sleek red gown that clung to her like a second skin. She looked radiant.

Austin kept glancing around the hall. His smile was tight, strained.

“Where is she?” Mira whispered behind her painted lips.

“She’ll come,” he muttered. “She wouldn’t miss this.”

But I already had.

Austin checked his phone again. No texts. No answers.

“I told you to make sure she showed up,” he snapped under his breath.

“I gave her the dress and the invite. I even apologized—what more do you want me to do?”

His jaw clenched. “She was supposed to be here.”

Then the staff wheeled in three gift boxes, neatly wrapped, topped with silver bows. A note sat on the first one in familiar handwriting:

For my husband and sister.

Happy celebration — Aria.

Austin’s entire body tensed.

Mira blinked. “She sent gifts?”

A delivery guy stepped forward with a note card. “Miss Aria said to deliver these at exactly 8 PM.”

Austin’s fingers curled around the card. He tore it open.

Congratulations.

You’ve earned everything coming to you.

—Aria

“What the hell is this?” he whispered.

Mira was already pulling at the first ribbon, impatient.

The lid lifted.

Inside: an envelope.

Austin opened it—and froze.

Divorce papers. Signed. Final. Witnessed. Stamped by the court.

He staggered a step back. Mira’s hand flew to her mouth.

Whispers rippled through the room.

“Divorce?”

“Wait… I thought Mira was his wife?”

“I thought Mira was his fiancée—”

The second box was opened.

Another envelope. And something heavier.

Austin pulled out a folded ultrasound photo.

And a sealed plastic container holding the remains of what the hospital returned to me after the surgery.

The label read:

Patient: Aria Harrington

Procedure: Emergency Termination / Internal Bleed

Four months gestation

Mira’s hand flew to her mouth.

Austin staggered back.

The crowd was stunned into silence.

“What… what is this?” someone whispered.

But it wasn’t over.

The third box remained.

The lid opened slowly.

And then—

Everyone gasped.

Austin froze and Mira turned pale.
