My name was Chelsea Glover. From a young age, I excelled in my studies and was obedient. My younger sister, on the other hand, was lazy and had no interest in learning.
Yet no matter how hard I tried, my parents always favored my sister and warned me to always accommodate her.
I graduated from college and brought my first boyfriend home to meet my parents.
My mother found an excuse to send me away and left my sister alone with my boyfriend, even suggesting that my sister seduced him.
When I questioned my mother, she shamelessly said.
"You have a good education and a good job. Just find another boyfriend.
"But Jane is different. She dropped out of school early, got involved with a scumbag, and got hurt. This is her only chance to marry into a good family.
"You're Jane's older sister. Shouldn't you humor her?"
——
After graduating, I got a job at a big company as a designer.
As I graduated from a famous university, I earned more than 2,000 dollars a month, and my sister, Jane Glover, who rarely contacted me, suddenly started to call me a lot.
"Chelsea, I'm short of money. Can you transfer me some?" Jane smiled on the other end of the line.
I heard the sound of glasses clinking from her end. I looked up at the clock and saw that it was 9:30 p.m.
She probably went out to drink with her friends again.
I frowned and asked, "Didn't you get a job recently? How come you're short of money?"
"I quit. The boss' wife was so annoying! She kept showing off her designer bag every day. I was bugged. That bitch!"
I sighed. Jane had already quit three jobs this year, and she had asked me for money several times.
She quit for various reasons, such as feeling exhausted from work or disliking the boss' wife.
I patiently advised her, "You should grow up. If you don't earn, you'll live off Mom and Dad..."
Jane impatiently interrupted me, "Cut the crap, Chelsea! I'm not living them off! It's not like I always ask them for money! Why is it so hard to ask for some money from you?"
I didn't know what to say.
She continued impatiently, "Are you going to give me the money or not? If not, I'll go ask Mom!"
Mom was already in her fifties and still worked as a cleaner and a dishwasher. She never said no to Jane, and I was sure she'd give Jane the money this time. And she'd blame me for turning Jane down.
Helplessly, I said, "I'll give you 300 dollars then..."
"That won't do. How about 800 dollars?" I heard the sound of pouring wine. "Christmas Day is around the corner. I wanna buy something for Mom and Dad."
I pinched the bridge of my nose and suggested again, "Don't be extravagant then. Making money isn't an easy thing."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're so annoying!"
The next second, she hung up the phone.
I saved the file on the laptop and transferred 800 dollars to Jane. She accepted it instantly and didn't thank me at all.
I sighed deeply, feeling helpless.
I was only two years older than Jane, but since we were young, our parents had spoiled her. They gave her everything she wanted, which made her more and more unruly. Now her temper was getting worse and worse.
I advised Mom to be stern to Jane so that she would focus on studying, yet Mom said, "You're her sister, and you can be the good student in our family. Take care of Jane, OK? That's what family does." I could only listen to her.
Due to years of indulgence, Jane had become more and more ignorant and incompetent.
She fell in love and dropped out of high school, and now she was with a bunch of cronies and didn't have a job.
When would she grow up?

While I was absentminded, my phone buzzed.
I looked down and saw a message from my boyfriend, Cyril Parsons. [Chelsea, I'm downstairs at your company, and I brought some snacks.]
I was excited at once. I turned off my computer, picked up my bag, and headed straight for the elevator.
Cyril smiled and handed me the food box, "Are you hungry? Have some."
Sitting on the bench outside the office building, I opened the food box and said, "I thought you brought me barbecue..."
"It's too greasy and unhealthy, and it's too late. It'll affect your digestion," he smiled and hugged me.
I pouted. "Alright, Dr. Parsons."
Cyril was my first boyfriend, and I was his first girlfriend. We met and fell in love in college, and we had been together for seven years in the blink of an eye.
I had been trying to get a foothold in the big city, and he had been working hard, too. He was already an attending doctor at a young age and was beginning to make his mark in the medical world.
Cyril wiped the corner of my lips with a tissue and asked, "When do I get to meet your parents?"
I paused for a moment.
He ruffled my hair. "My mom really likes you and keeps urging me to marry you."
His family conditions were much better than mine. His father was in business, and his mother was a doctor. They were both influential figures.
In terms of social status, I was not a match for Cyril. So, I was smart enough not to talk about marriage.
Recently, Mom wanted to set me up with someone. I thought for a bit and said, "Wanna meet them on Christmas Day?"
"Sure," Cyril smiled, "It's settled then!"
I nodded. "Sure."

I worked overtime a few days to get my work done in order to make sure I was available on Christmas Day. And I took a day off in advance.
Cyril also took a day off and took me to the supermarket to buy a whole trunk of gifts. Then he drove three hundred kilometers to go back home with me.
When we entered the house, there was no one there. My parents were not at home.
Jane walked out of the bedroom in a tank top and short pants, yawning lazily, and glanced at me.
I asked, "Where are Mom and Dad?"
"They have something to do, of course. Do you think everyone is as idle as you?"
Cyril carried some expensive wine into the house and carefully placed the bottles on the floor. "Your parents aren't home?"
"Yes..." I was a bit apologetic.
After all, I had told my parents in advance that I would arrive at this time, but they didn't wait for me at home. Obviously, they didn't take this matter seriously.
Cyril smiled and said, "It's fine. We'll wait."
Jane looked over impatiently, and when she saw Cyril, her eyes clearly lit up. "You are?"
Cyril politely smiled, "Hi. I'm Cyril, Chelsea's boyfriend."
"So, you are Cyril." Jane sized him up and walked over. Then she said straightforwardly, "You're so handsome!"
Cyril was stunned for a moment, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Thanks."
I looked at Jane. The neckline of her tank top was so low that I could see her cleavage. Her thighs were exposed in the air, and she looked hot and seductive.
No wonder Cyril was so uneasy.
I frowned, pulled Jane back to the bedroom, took out a Tshirt and pants from the wardrobe, and handed them to her. "Change your clothes. We've got a guest here."
"What's wrong with my clothes?" Jane rolled her eyes. "Chelsea, are you afraid that Cyril will be attracted to me?"
I handed the clothes to her again. "You aren't dressed enough. It's not appropriate."
"Appropriate? How? It's the 21st century already, Chelsea," Jane sneered, wrapped her arms around her breasts, and looked at me, showing no intention of taking the clothes in my hands at all.
Her voice was quite loud, and I wondered whether Cyril sitting in the living room could hear her.
I was a bit annoyed. I didn't want Cyril to know about my situation at home, but it seemed impossible to hide it from him anymore.
"Come on. Are you mad?" Jane leaned over, her tone provocative. "That's right. After all, you must have gone through a lot before finding yourself a boyfriend. If he likes me, you'll be devastated. Guys always pursue me and ignore you!"
I looked at her coldly. Since we were young, Jane had always looked down on me, her older sister. She used to think I was unfashionable, and even after I earned more money than her, she still looked down on me. She still tried to provoke me now that I was seeing someone.
Glancing at the Chanel classic bag by the bedside, I frowned, walked up to it, and felt its texture.
Cyril gave me this bag not long ago, so I could tell it wasn't fake.
But how could she afford it?
"Don't touch it!" Jane rushed up, patted my hand away, and carefully stuffed the bag into the cabinet. "Didn't anyone tell you not to touch other people's things?"
"Where did you get the money to buy that bag?" I frowned and asked.
She rolled her eyes and said, "What does it have to do with you?"
I was so mad that I actually laughed and said, "You spent all the money I gave you on bags?"
"None of your business!"
My gaze shifted to the lipsticks and foundation on the dressing table. They were all from luxury brands!
But the money I gave her wasn't enough to buy all these!
"Jane, you..."
"You're so annoying!" Jane interrupted me and snatched the clothes from my hands. "Get out! I need to change clothes!"

She walked out of her bedroom again.
She had changed into an offshoulder blouse, paired with a black mini skirt.
I glanced at her and decided not to bother with her.
Cyril pulled my hand and said, "I will cook my specialty for you later."
"No way. You're our guest," I said hurriedly. "Later, I..."
"He wants to cook. Why are you stopping him?" Dad, with a big belly, came in from the door and glanced at us. "You're back so early."
I stood up and felt a bit embarrassed hearing his words.
Cyril stood up as well and politely greeted, "Hi. My name is Cyril Parsons, and I am Chelsea's boyfriend."
Dad walked in and casually replied, "I know. Chelsea has already told us."
Mom came in with the vegetables and said, "Cyril, there wasn't much food left at the market today, so we didn't buy anything fancy. Just make do with it, OK?"
As I saw the few vegetable leaves and a piece of pork in the basket, my smile froze.
A few days ago, I had already told them that I would bring Cyril home and even transferred 150 dollars to my mom, asking her to buy some good vegetables.
And now, she was telling us there wasn't much food left at the market? How was that possible?
Dad casually took off his shoes and lay slanted on the sofa, Mom had a fake smile on her face, and Jane's eyes were mocking.
My gut told me that they were behaving like this on purpose.
I clenched my fists and was about to speak, but Cyril smiled, "It's fine. As long as the whole family gathers."
Cyril's expression didn't change. He was as gentle as always.
He took the basket from my mother's hand and went straight to the kitchen.
I quickly caught up with him and whispered, "I'm sorry. I didn't know they..."
"It's fine." Cyril lowered his gaze and washed the vegetables. "No need to be mad."

On the large dining table, there were only four dishes.
It felt like a slap in my face.
Then Cyril poured a glass of the fine wine for Dad, who beamed and took a sip, saying, "I know it's a good wine as soon as I drink it!"
I said, "It is. Cyril specially asked someone to buy it. He bought four bottles!"
Dad glanced at the wine in the corner. "What do you do for a living, Cyril?"
"I'm a clinical doctor working at New York Central Hospital," Cyril answered.
Mom's eyes lit up. "It's such a decent job! What do your parents do?"
"My dad runs a small company, and my mom is the chief physician of another hospital, which is one of the top three."
Mom was somewhat delighted. "Chelsea should have brought you back long ago. She's so insensible..."
I pursed my lips and didn't say anything.
Cyril held my hand and smiled, "Chelsea is great. I want to marry her."
I was stunned.
Jane sarcastically said, "So loveydovey."
Dad picked up a piece of food. "OK. That's a good thing. Well, the dowry is gonna be 150,000 dollars."
I stood up at once. "That much? Why?"
"What do you know?" Dad put down his fork angrily. "In this family, I call the shots! You're my daughter! You've got to listen to me!"
Cyril quickly mediated, "It's fine. We can talk about it. Mr. Glover, calm down."
Dad snorted and didn't say anything.
I was still standing, feeling veins on my forehead popping out. I was so angry that my face turned red. How outrageous!
Cyril wanted to pull me, but Mom beat him to it. "Chelsea, I've got something to say to you. Let's go outside and get some fresh air."
I glanced at Cyril, and Mom patted me. "Let the men talk."
"What about Jane?"
"Not important. She'll go back to her room after finishing eating."

Then Mom pulled me out.
I was still upset, but when I felt the wind outside, I calmed down.
"How long have you been dating Cyril?" mom asked.
"Seven years. We got together in college."
Mom frowned. "Why haven't you said anything?"
I opened my mouth, not knowing what to say.
Every time I wanted to share something with her, she always talked about Jane. She didn't care about what I wanted to say at all.
"Does Cyril have any ... colleagues or classmates to introduce to Jane?"
Mom continued eagerly, "Someone with money. I don't want Jane to suffer. Oh, and someone with a good degree and a pretty face. Someone like Cyril. He's her type."
Looking at Mom's eager eyes, I felt upset.
She said she didn't want to see Jane suffer, but she always told me that girls should endure hardships since I was little.
I felt sick for no reason, and I replied coldly, "No."
"No? How could that be?" My mom was anxious. "You don't wanna help her, right? You're her sister. How come you don't care about her at all?"
I took a deep breath and said, "Today is about me. Have you cared about me at all?
"I already gave you money, but you wouldn't even buy enough food. What will Cyril think of me?
"And Dad asked for 150,000 dollars? Even our house isn't worth that much!"
Frustrated, I finally snapped and asked her sternly.
My mom was stunned for a moment, and then she cursed, "You ought to give us money! You're our daughter! You know my friend, Patricia Shorts? Patricia's daughter gives her all her wages! We're nothing but nice to you!"
"I give you 500 dollars every month, and Jane also asks me for money, and Dad also asks me for money for beer," I said, laughing out of anger. "I've got no savings at all. It's no different from giving you my wages!"
"You're so ungrateful! It's not like you're making some huge sacrifices! We raised you for nothing!"
My mom pushed me, and her voice became sharp.
I stumbled. Realizing that I couldn't communicate with her at all, I turned around and left.
She caught up and grabbed my arm. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going back."
"No! You can't go back!" She suddenly sounded anxious.
I looked at her in confusion. "Why not?"
She avoided my gaze, feeling a little guilty. I had a bad feeling, and I shook off her hand and walked towards the door.
The door was locked from the outside, so I quickly unlocked it with the key.
I saw that Jane's shirt had already undone four buttons, revealing her lace bra underneath. She looked very slutty.
And Cyril struggled to get up, leaning against the sofa and swaying. "Don't..."
