“Miss, just to confirm. Are you really willing to marry a man in a vegetative state?”
“I am. But I want a bride price of two billion dollars.”
“No problem. Next month, the Jensen Family will send a car to pick you up.”
The elegant woman stood up and left the cafe.
I sat quietly, my gaze drifting to the playground in the distance.
There, my husband of seven years, Elijiah Jensen was helping a mother and child onto the carousel.
The tender smile on his face was the same one I saw just three days ago in the hospital.
Three days ago, I went to the hospital as usual to get an IVF injection to prepare for our fiftyfourth IVF.
But while walking past the examination department, I ran into Elijiah Jensen, with Jemma Kimberly and her son.
When Jemma saw me, she leaned happily into his embrace.
“Can you believe Michael is already six? You only ever show up for the annual checkup.”
The little boy looked up with a pout.
“Dad, when can I move into the big villa?”
Elijiah chuckled.
“You want to live in the villa? That’s easy. I’ll come get you tomorrow.”
Jemma Kimberly lit up with joy and the three walked away, laughing like a perfect little family.
Not long after, my phone lit up with a barrage of messages from Jemma.
[I know you saw us. I’m not his friend’s widow. I’m his first love.]
[Every time Elijiah stood you up, he was with me.]
She sent dozens of explicit videos of her and Elijiah, along with a paternity test report.
At the end, came a screenshot of a bulk order. Birth control pills, all placed by Elijiah Jensen.
[Ever wonder why you couldn’t get pregnant for seven years?]
I stared at my screen, heart pounding.
Then I rushed back to the clinic and pulled the ‘vitamins’ from my bag.
The doctor looked at the label and froze.
“Why are you on birth control pills while undergoing IVF?”
I stood there in shock, as though the world had gone silent.
These pills… the ones he told me were to “help my body prepare for the pain of conception”, they were birth control.
Seven years. Seven years of injections, hormone crashes, hope and heartbreak.
And the only thing he gave me with genuine care, was a daily dose of sabotage.
Meanwhile, his illegitimate child—his real child—was six years old.
Tears slid down my cheeks as I walked home.
I sat at the desk, turned on the computer and with steady fingers, typed out the divorce papers.
Word by word.
When I returned home from the cafe, my phone buzzed with a notification.
A full five million dollars had been transferred to my account.
Note: Bride Price.
It was three million more than agreed upon, more than enough to fund my new beginning.
A faint smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
But in the next second, I heard Elijiah shouting downstairs.
“Michael is in shock and you’re still smiling? Has your conscience been eaten by a dog?!”
I looked up to see the three of them standing in the center of the living room. Michael was sobbing.
I didn’t ask what happened. Without a word, I turned and walked upstairs.
Then came Jemma’s voice, soft but deliberately loud enough for me to hear.
“Michael hasn’t been sleeping well. I heard the peace charm around your neck helps calm the mind…”
That peace charm was a keepsake from my mother.
Elijiah met my reddened eyes, visibly annoyed.
“If the child needs it, give it to him. It’s just a trinket, why act like you’ve been hurt?”
He yanked the charm from my neck. The thin chain snapped and left a red line of blood across my skin.
The amber pendant, now stained with blood, made Jemma frown.
“If she doesn’t want to give it, forget it. But how could she curse Michael with something bloodstained?”
Elijiah exploded.
“You’re still so malicious, Sandra! Get out and kneel in the garden—go reflect on yourself!”
The injury was his fault, but as long as Jemma said something, he wouldn’t even let me explain.
Two servants dragged me outside. The sharp gravel dug into my knees, turning them into a bloodied mess.
Jemma bent down and whispered in my ear:
“Sandra Lynn, you’re pathetic. Still clinging to the title of Mrs. Jensen? Just wait. I’ll make your life worse than death.”
I knelt until night fell, the rain soaking me to the bone.
Through the downpour, I faintly heard Jemma’s shrill voice.
When I looked up, I saw Elijiah gently warming her feet against his bare chest, his jacket around her shoulders.
For a moment, my mind drifted to a memory, a winter day three years ago.
Elijiah had gone missing while skiing. I braved wind and snow, hiking for two days and nights to find him.
His body was icecold. I gave him every piece of clothing I had.
When he finally opened his eyes, the first thing he said was, “Great. I see you first, how unlucky.”
Then he stood and walked away, leaving me halffrozen in the snow.
So it wasn’t that he didn’t know how to care for someone.
He just didn’t think I was worth it.
Thunder cracked across the sky. Jemma curled up in his arms.
I lost consciousness and collapsed.
The next morning, before I even woke up properly, I was dragged out of bed by Elijiah.
“Sandra, you’re quite the schemer, aren’t you?! Can’t wait to throw a wedding now?!”
I was burning with fever, my mind foggy.
From Jemma’s sobs, I pieced it together.
Someone had photographed them at the amusement park and the media broke the story, our marriage was public now.
To save face and stabilize the Jensen Family’s stock, the elders demanded that we hold a wedding to dispel the rumors.
After all, we never had one seven years ago.
Back then, the woman originally meant to marry Elijiah had run away. Drunk and furious, he consumed something he shouldn’t have.
I was the “antidote.”
We got married in a blur.
Since then, he’d always believed I tricked him into marriage.
And now, with talk of a public wedding, he naturally assumed this was another one of my schemes.
I opened my mouth to explain, but just then, a message popped up on my phone:
[Miss Lynn, Kevin has woken up. He insists on marrying you—properly, with a grand wedding.]
My hands were too weak to type, so I responded with a voice message:
“Okay. I’ll be there.”
Elijiah was livid.
“Sandra, you’re dreaming! I told you, you’ll never have that title as long as I live!”
“I won’t go to your wedding. Let’s see you become a laughingstock again.”
Jemma sobbed louder. He held her close and comforted her tenderly.
I watched them, the picture of affection and said nothing.
Because this time…
The groom was not him.
That afternoon, I had a high fever that had not subsided and Elijiah forced me to pull me into the car and went straight to the airport.
Jemma smiled like a flower.
"I'm sorry, I heard that you guys were going to have a wedding, Michael and I were touched by the scenery."
"Elijiah insisted on taking us to New Orleans for a break, we're not used to eating the food over there, so I'm going to trouble you to make it."
He's taking his first love and illegitimate son on a trip and tying me up to babysit.
I backhanded the car door to get down, but he yanked me back and the door then locked.
"Had enough of the drama? Behave better this time and I might even consider the wedding."
Jemma grunted lightly in displeasure.
Elijiah immediately turned his head to coax her.
After a few hours of flying and landing, Jemma used me as a servant.
Whenever I showed the slightest reluctance, Elijiah coldly threatened me.
"The shares your mom left you before she died are still with me, don't you want them?"
One strike and you're in.
I had to let them toss and turn with a high fever.
It wasn't until nightfall that I was able to catch my breath.
But I didn't want to, just sat down, the table and chairs suddenly shook.
The cell phone sounded a shrill earthquake alarm.
"Earthquake, run"
The hotel crowd erupted, screaming and scattering in all directions.
I pulled my legs out and ran.
But the earthquake came faster.
Before I could react, I was buried in the rubble.
By the time the earth stopped shaking, I couldn't see anything in front of me.
The darkness was rapidly taking away oxygen and my breathing gradually became weak.
I don't know how long it took, but a familiar voice reached my ears.
"Help ooohhhh ...... I don't want to die ......"
It was Jemma, she was buried here with me.
Her voice very much caught the attention of the rescuers and the rubble above was moved away, letting in a glimmer of light.
Michael cried out for her mother and Elijiah heartbreakingly soothed, "Jemma don't be afraid, we'll save you right away."
The words fell, the rescuer then spoke with difficulty.
"Mr. Jensen, there are still people pressed on the other side of this concrete, warping this end, I'm afraid that the people on the other end..."
Elijiah only then realized me.
Just about to speak, Michael cried and shouted, "Dad, save mom!"
Although it had long been known that Michael was Elijiah's illegitimate son, but when he heard this name in person, his heart still died once again.
Elijiah did not respond for a long time.
Rescuers urged, "Mr. Jensen, hurry up and make a decision, otherwise when the aftershock comes later, none of them can be saved."
Only after a long time did Elijiah Jensen open his mouth coldly and stiffly.
"Save Jemma..."
I slowly closed my eyes and there was no more ripple in my heart.
The concrete was cocked and Jemma got out, excitedly hugging Elijiah.
Their family of three cried tears of joy, celebrating the aftermath of the robbery.
The coarse, heavy concrete pressed down on me, aggravating my already serious injuries.
I spat out a mouthful of blood and my consciousness fell into darkness.
Waking up again, I had returned to North City Hospital.
Vaguely, I heard Elijiah and his assistant talking at the door.
"Mr. Jensen, taking advantage of Madam's coma to give her mother's shares to Miss Kimberly, isn't it not appropriate?"
"Jemma is clamoring for it, can I not give it? Just that little share, it's Jemma's honor to see it."
After saying that, Elijiah pushed the door in.
Four eyes met and a trace of embarrassment flashed across his face.
"You heard everything?"
Shares, it's the last thought that mom left me with.
Tears involuntarily filled my eyes as I choked, "Elijiah Jensen, you've gone too far!"
He raised his volume.
"Alright, who are you crying for? It's not just a little bit of broken shares. I'll transfer money not just to you."
"If it wasn't for you having to make up for the wedding and upsetting Jemma and the others, why would I need to take them for a break."
"In the end, this is all your fault."
I didn't say anything, only my tears wetting the pillow.
He wanted to scold me, but looking at my weak appearance, he held back.
After a while, he said in a twisted manner, "Save Jemma first this time, you did suffer, I will make it up to you."
"You don't want to think about the wedding, but the wedding anniversary can be done in a grand manner."
I was just about to refuse when a message came on my cell phone.
Over there, it said that the wedding date was finalized.
Coincidentally, it was on the same day as our wedding anniversary.
The other party politely asked if it was convenient for me and if not then relook at the date.
I wiped away my tears and messaged back.
[Just that day.]
Seeing that my emotions calmed down, Elijiah suspiciously asked, "Who are you texting?"
He had, before, never asked me this.
A wave of boredom rose in my heart and I perfunctorily said, "News push."
Elijiah didn't have any doubts.
Because in his perception, he was my world.
I had no socialization, no friends and there was no way anyone would pick me up.
The pain in my body was so severe that I reached out and wanted to ring the bell to call the nurse.
Elijiah was about to help me when the phone rang.
Jemma cried on the other side of the phone, "Elijiah, my head hurts ......"
Elijiah didn't hesitate for a second and turned around.
A week after that, I never saw him again.
But there were always messages from Jemma on my cell phone.
In the few days I was hospitalized, they were upside down in the master bedroom and used up three boxes of condoms.
The lilies I planted in the garden were pulled out one by one by Elijiah and replaced with her favorite roses.
Even the children's room that I prepared with all my heart was changed into an erotic room by Elijiah just because she said she wanted to try a new style.
I numbly pressed off the screen and checked out of the hospital alone.
Only when I arrived home, Elijiah slapped me in the face.
"Wow, you act innocent but all you do is turning facts upside down? "
I realized that just a minute before I was discharged from the hospital, Jemma and Michael were sent away by the old master.
Elijiah was furious.
"It wasn't easy for Jemma to bring up her child and you're still going did them dirty, saying that they're my mistress and illegitimate children."
"Sandra, why you are so heartless?!"
I asked indifferently, "Isn't it?"
Elijiah was instantly dumbfounded.
After ten seconds or so, he asked slightly nervously, "What do you know?"
I asked him in return, "What should I know?"
At this point in time, he still treats me like a fool.
I wasn't in the mood to play along with him and went upstairs by mistake.
Right at this moment, he received a call from his assistant.
The other party was about to talk about Jemma Kimberly and Michael's current situation and Elijiah dropped his cell phone in a fit of rage.
"Sandra, how dare you, how dare you let grandpa beat them!"
"I'm telling you, if anything happens to them, I'll never let you go!"
He left angrily, I didn't even turn my head back.
Another message came in on my cell phone and the person on the other end asked me carefully about my requirements and details for the wedding.
I mistook my eyes for the roses in the garden and replied, [No roses.]
Back in my room, the calendar and divorce papers lay on the table.
I picked up a pen and circled the wedding day and start packing.
I had just packed a suitcase when Elijiah returned.
"You made a mistake and want to walk away? Where do you think you can hide?"
I was too lazy to explain and handed him the divorce agreement.
Afraid that he wouldn't sign it, I lied with my eyes downcast. "This is the supplemental agreement for the shares you gave Jemma."
Unexpectedly, he didn't even look at it and directly signed it.
It wasn't that he was relieved to see me, but he didn't care at all and at the same time. He was certain that I wouldn't leave him even if I died.
"I count on you to understand. Grandpa is just looking for someone to talk this time, so I'm barely sparing you this time."
"But you scared her, on your wedding anniversary, you publicly apologize to her."
I didn't plan on going anyway and didn't want to bother with more words, so I bowed my head and said, "Okay."
Elijiah was exceptionally satisfied with my good behavior and showed great mercy.
"There's no need to cook tonight, I'll take Jemma and Michael to eat at the Marina Restaurant."
That night, the three of them didn't come back as a family.
In the wee hours of the morning, I unsurprisingly received a text message and video from Jemma.
I skillfully saved them and rolled over to sleep.
The next day, I was woken up by the sound of a transfer and my account reminded of the entry of fiftytwo million dollars.
An unfamiliar number sent a message.
[Happy Birthday.]
Without waiting for me to reply, the doorbell rang and takeout delivered the cake.
It's my favorite taro puree flavor.
There was also a big bunch of tulips, greeting card with a simple "Smith".
I knew, rare in the depressing days tasted a hint of nesting.
However, this nesting lasted less than three minutes and was broken up by Elijiah and Jemma who came back.
"Where did the tulips come from? Don't you know that Jemma is allergic to tulips?"
Before the words left his mouth, he threw the flowers into the trash can.
It was the warmth that I couldn't easily feel.
I subconsciously went to pick it up and Elijiah stomped on my hand.
"You're doing this on purpose aren't you? Just can't see that Jemma is good?"
I whimpered in pain as Jemma feigned kindness.
"Elijiah don't be like this, sister probably just has something happy to celebrate, I'm fine with it."
Only then did Elijiah see the cake on the table.
He froze for a moment. "Today is your birthday?"
I pulled my hand out from under his foot and didn't answer.
Instead, Elijiah Jensen became angry.
"Since it's your birthday, why didn't you say so earlier?"
His neck still had the hickey from Jemma's sucking on it and this kind of questioning seemed unusually disgusting.
I held back my retching, "There's no need."
The flowers weren't picked up, I silently said sorry to the person who sent the flowers in my heart and went back to my room with the cake.
Half an hour later, Elijiah walked in and threw me a bag. "Birthday present."
I turned my head to look at the cupboard, where there were six more exactly the same.
In the past few years, Elijiah never remembered my birthday.
I always tirelessly reminded him of it, wanting him to spend it with me.
But all he gave was always cold gifts.
At first, I was excited, treating the gift like a treasure.
I consoled myself with the thought that at least he cared about me by picking out a gift for me personally.
Until I heard him instructing his assistant, "Buy her something random, so as not to always bother me and Jemma."
That's when I realized that he had never been interested in me.
Seven years, from full of expectation to no ripples, I had long gotten used to it.
I took the bag without saying a word and together with the other six, resold it to a second luxury store.
The rest of the worthless stuff, a fire burned clean.
The following day, I went to a bridal store to try on wedding dresses in preparation for the wedding.
The clerk brought a set of handmade high definition.
"This was expedited and customized by Mr. Smith, dozens of handmade masters worked day and night to rush it, Miss Lynn is really lucky."
The wedding dress suits me well, from the style to the size, it's all customized.
The store clerk surrounded me with compliments and said she wanted to take pictures to report.
I cooperated and stood in front of the mirror, but I heard a familiar voice ring out.
"Hey, why are you here?"
I turned my head sideways and saw Elijiah and Jemma walk out of the fitting room.
The two of them, one wearing a white dress and the other wearing a black suit, looked like a very compatible pair.
Elijiah frowned at me, "I said there won't be a wedding, what are you doing trying on wedding dresses?"
I faintly said, "I like it, it has nothing to do with you."
I really like this wedding dress, it makes me feel valued and loved.
Jemma held Elijiah's arm demonstratively.
"She is preparing for the anniversary day, right? What a coincidence, Elijiah also accompanied me to pick out a dress."
"However, Elijiah prepared a big gift for me that day and you're going to apologize to me in public, so it's too noisy to wear something so flamboyant, isn't it?"
I was too lazy to argue about who was the guest and who was the host for our wedding anniversary.
I looked at Elijiah, "On that day, I also prepared a gift for you."
Elijiah’s face slightly slowed down, revealing an expression that said, "I'm sure that's the case."
Seeing this, Jemma pulled him back into the fitting room, clamoring to pick a more luxurious one.
I didn't care about them, changed out of the wedding dress and left.
When I was taking a taxi, Elijiah came behind me and said unprecedentedly, "Go back together."
The sky was covered with dark clouds, I looked at the sky that was about to rain heavily, I did not refuse.
On the way, the hospital called and told me that I could go for egg retrieval.
I replied, "No need."
Elijiah looked at me fiercely, his eyes carrying a deep suspicion.
"What do you mean there's no need? Haven't you always wanted to have my child?"
I calmly looked back at him, "I don't want to now."
Fiftythree failures, I've tasted the pain, only to find out in the end that it was because of the birth control pills disguised as vitamins.
For the fiftyfourth time, I wouldn't be stupid again.
This should be Elijiah's happy ending.
But he was inexplicably angry. "When you say you don't want to, you don't want to, in the end, how long are you going to make trouble?"
In the past, when he was angry, I would review myself while pleasing him.
When he was happy, then I would carefully explain that I wasn't making a scene.
But right now, I just stared at him expressionlessly and said in a faint voice, "Miss Kimberly is not happy."
At those words, Elijiah turned around and hugged Jemma.
The back row of the threeperson seat was hard and empty in the center.
Back home, Elijiah rarely ordered, "Add a set of chopsticks for dinner and fry two of Madam's favorite dishes."
Since Jemma moved in, I have either been in the kitchen or waiting on the side during mealtimes.
This was the first time that Elijiah wanted me to share a table.
Unfortunately, I had long since stopped caring.
The wedding day was getting closer and closer, I counted the days, turning a blind eye to Jemma and Elijiah’s increasingly reckless behavior.
While they should have been happy, Elijiah was fleshly annoyed.
His attention began to unconsciously focus on me, questioning how long I was going to throw a tantrum.
I looked at the redcircled calendar.
"Soon."
Seeing me so cold, Elijiah's nameless fire went straight to his head and kicked over the sofa.
Jemma stuck up, he pushed away for the first time and turned around to vent in the home gym.
That night, my room was unsurprisingly splashed with water.
After all, in two days is the wedding, I want to go to the hotel.
However, I didn't want to be blocked by Jemma at the door of my room.
"Sandra, you're really deadly cheap!"
"I've been in my room for so long and you're still relying on me, playing some lustful tricks every day."
"Don't say that, the way you have a cold face is quite different from your past image as a licking dog."
"However, you said that if this face of yours is ruined, what's the use of being different?"
The fruit knife that flashed with a cold light stabbed towards me and I instinctively resisted.
Between pulling and tugging, Jemma’s feet slipped, tugging me along as they rolled down the stairs.
"Sandra"
The blade cut through my arm and I heard Elijiah's voice.
It was tinged with panic, as if he cared about me.
He ran over in three steps, his face showing panic.
In the next second, Jemma's cries rang out.
"Elijiah, my feet hurt ......."
Without the need for her to finish, Elijiah did not hesitate to pick her up.
Without even looking at me, he directly turned around and left.
Between Jemma and I, he once again, righteously chose Jemma.
I got up to bandage my wound, dragged my suitcase and left the villa against the night.
When I checked in at the hotel, I received a message from Elijiah.
[Where are you? I'm warning you, the day after tomorrow is the anniversary, don't give me any trouble!]
I didn't reply.
The next morning, I called the city courier, the three gifts I prepared for Elijiah sent.
At night, Elijiah sent a message again.
[Still not coming back? Tomorrow is the anniversary. I told you not to play tricks!]
I backhandedly dragged him into the blacklist and shut down the phone on that.
I woke up with a start and the professional makeup team put on my makeup and styling.
I changed into a highcustomized wedding dress, sat in the Maybach sent by that person and rubbed shoulders with Elijiah's car.
In the afterglow, he seemed to have turned his head.
And I looked ahead, without him in my eyes.
Elijiah Jensen, from now on, you and I were strangers.
